SP 125Z 1982 won't start - CDI issues?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Have a 1982 SP 125Z, with first year for CDI. It has spark and tries to fire but won't. Took it to local reliable small repair shop who went over the engine with no issues, carb checks out good etc, all the normal troubleshooting. In testing the CDI using Ohm meter the resistance values are off the scale. I cannot find a used one anywhere and new they are $250 and above. Does anyone know of an aftermarket unit or other option for replacement? OEM part# 32900-05210. The SP200 or others are very similar but missing one connector.

Thanks!

Purchased a new CDI unit and the bike starts on first kick. Runs great until the engine warms up, then it sputters and stalls. It will start right up bit as soon as you try to drive it and put any load on the engine it just stalls. If you let it sit and cool off it will run but dies again when it warms up. Adjusted valves, getting fuel, could it be a coil problem or something else electrical?

could well be an electrical component breaking down , you should be able to test the ht coil with a resistance check ,also check plug , plug cap and ht lead ,

i had very similar symptoms with an xr250 a few years back , would start no problem and run for a few mins but would then splutter and fart and cut out , turned out to be the pick up coil , that can also be checked with a resistance test if you know what the reading should be

Thanks for the response. The coil reading for the primary is in spec. The secondary should be 15 to 20k ohms with a reading of 11k so it is below spec. Can I try a coil off of a bike that is a 12v system?

Is the pick up coil the same as the Magneto? That reading is within spec.

does  your manual have a secondary  resistance value with and without the plug cap ? if you're ok on the lead but not at the cap then the cap could be the problem ,

the pick up coil , also known as a pulse coil sends a signal to the cdi triggering the spark , it would be a seperate component to your stator
