Recently I hit a tree that had fallen on the trail and smashed the radiator on the exhaust side. Luckily, my bike has Devol radiator guards and instead of crushing it, it just twisted a bit.

My question is, would it be a bad idea to try straightening it?

Depends how you do it and how much but no, not a bad idea. I have done it several times with good success.

I did that too. Started looking really bad, thought "what have I got to lose?" Watched a couple of YouTube videos and gave it a go. It's amazing how bad they can be and still turn out looking good and square.
Good luck.
