YZ450FX IS ON IT'S WAY

Recommended Posts

Excellent! How much does the full WR450 OEM exhaust weigh? How much does a full FMF Megabomb (Ti) with PC4 muffler weigh? How much does the OEM battery weigh and what is the weight of the Shorai? Let's not bother with other trinkets like weight saving hydraulic clutch, GYTR hub and basket, lighter chain guide, chain block, disc guard, CS guard, and all that BS. It's seems fairly easy to get rid of 10 pounds and still have the starter.....but I digress....

If weight is so important, why get a 450.

If power is so important, why worry about weight.

If starting on an off camber rocky hill is hard, why take off the estart.

If the estart is so heavy, why buy a WR.

If the WR wider ratio is the only reason, why now swap WR trans to a YZ.

If the questions are less important than the answers, you will always be dissatisfied.

Its all in the thread.  I'm not going to repeat it here.

FYI, the FMF Megabomb Ti header is fragile.  I wouldn't get it for off road use.  And it doesn't save a lot of weight anyway.

Durabilty of the Ti Megabomb is not the point I was making. Be that as it may, what sucks about it is the cost and the cost vs. benefit varies from rider to rider. I have one and like it.

Now how about those weights? You're going to leave it hanging and tell us what you say is factual when it's pretty near total BS?

He's worse than talking to a 10 year old. But I believe you are correct in your assumptions :D

Shorai claims 3.17 pounds savings on the battery.  The weight loss thread says 7.45 pounds for the stock muffler and clamp and 5.2 pounds for the ti powercore.  Don't know if the header was weighed, didn't get that far.  Probably around 6 pounds savings for full exhaust and lithium battery.  I'll probably get a lithium battery when the stock one dies but that might not be for a few years.

The stock WR450F battery weighs 4.60 pounds.   Does the Shorai battery weigh 1.43 pounds ?

The stock header weighs 2.02 pounds with the clamp.  According to this, the FMF Ti header weighs 1.2 pounds. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/FMF-MegaBomb-Ti-Header-Yamaha-WR450F-2007-2013-/390978549782  For ~$350 you save 0.8 pounds and get a header that gets dented by rocks thrown up from the front tire.  My friend has one.

My estimate of your weight savings

Battery replacement  2.5 pounds  (4.6 - 2.1 pounds)

Muffler replacement 2.25 pounds (7.45 - 5.2)

Ti header pipe  0.8 pounds.

Total loss 5.55  pounds.

You really have to watch what people say about shaving these bikes.  Most don't weigh anything and go by manufacturer's claims.  Get a hand scale and weigh everything yourself and then you will really know.

The WR felt better and probably is better overall then the YZF for a typical trail guy. The YZF is awesome for a racer but is too much bike 50% of the time. The handling and performance of the YZF are beyond unreal but when the going gets tough, unless you have some decent skill you'll never use the bike potential. You'll never make it out of 3rd gear in normal trail riding. The power is so broad and with the flick of the wrist literally jumps out from underneath you. I also find the bike too tall. I've got a call in for a 250FX as I'm taking a step back from racing.

Do you still feel this way about the YZF after more riding time and your recent win ?

I got a newbie (to tight woods) with a 2015 YZ450F riding with our group.  He is doing well, even in the technical terrain.  I'm impressed with him and his bike.

I took a short spin on his YZF.  Doesn't seem like an uncontrollable monster, but I just did a short trip down a hill and climbed back up.   I didn't open the YZF right up, but to 3/4 throttle in 2nd gear it wasn't a whole lot different than my WR with the YZ cam.   A bit more torquey, but very controllable.

He was having stalling/starting problems until we bumped up his idle speed.  Haven't checked it with the tuner, its probably a bit high, but no more stalling and it starts a lot better.   He's running a 12 tooth front sprocket, so the higher idle speed isn't killing his bike's ability to crawl.  Its still crawls faster than my WR, but its manageable.

Unfortunately, a short spin never tells the whole story. The YZF in itself is an amazing bike but still is just too aggressive for most...

I've never considered any year WR as a "go fast" bike.

There a workhorse of a dirt bike. The people who take it as that are the happy WR owners.

I'm very happy with my old 03. Never suprises me, does everthing I ask it to. Of course I don't ask a lot out of it.

Every one expects too much from dual sport bikes. The probem is there like back hoes and swiss army knifes. They will do a lot of things, but they DON'T DO any one thing particulary that WELL.

If ya wanna go fast, get a bike without valves thats in the half liter range as far as displacement.

If ya want a great E-start woods weapon get a Christini 300AWD.

Balderdash

My modified WR is faster and better handling than a stock YZ450F, until you hit long whoop fields. Then it kicks your ass. Everywhere else (but track) it's better. I don't ride track.

It's more fun than my CRF450R, KTM 350XCFW, and CRF450X (and the bikes I sold, the KX450F, the KTM 450SXF and 500 XCW)

Two strokes SUCK in low traction situation. There only advantage is power to weight. That 's not much.

Chrsitini's SUCK in all aspects.  If they were good, they would sell. They don't sell.  They also don't work. Or turn. Or stop. Or change direction. Or anything, but make sitting on your ass and climbing little hills easier.

If you just practice balancing on the pegs, you don't need all wheel drive.

This forum is second place in all around misinformation, second only to the KTM EXC forum.

I've heard and seen nothing but good things with the Christini bikes. But I've never rode one.

ON PAPER there the coolest thing out there.

My CR500AF with a IRC 140 MB5 rear tire tractors and hooks up WAY better in low traction situations than my WR does.

If 2 strokes are difficult to ride in low traction situations, then why do they power most trials bikes?
