My 08 yz450 starts first kick, idles good but no rev and pops, shoots flames. went through the carb twice for a lean condition but still no change.

tried a cdi but no change. any ideas? Can it still be in the carb?

It's rare but check that your needle has not broken or that the clip has not come off the needle. If that happened the bike will run fine until you twist the throttle, at which point the carb will suck a bunch of air but no more fuel to burn.

Happened to a friend's CRF450X a couple years ago. It would start and idle perfectly but as soon as he gave it any throttle it would die.

Blocked main jet, water in the carb,... other options.
