TM valve adjustment

Hi everyone,

I've been trawling the net for a detailed 450f manual for a 2008 tm 450 en with no luck.

Long story short i'm trying to find a manual or how to on how to adjust the valves. Has anyone had anyluck?

They are straightforward bucket and shims. Shims diameter is different but if you buy from the dealer you cant go wrong.

Inlet 0.20mm

Exhaust 0.25mm

 

PS it involves removing the cams and re-timing the engine after. Leave it to your mechanic if you are not certain. Big dollar damage possible if you get it wrong.

Yes, you're right. I've not had the bike long and needed a few bits, so I contacted TM UK. I read the specs on their website, and then asked Mike to confirm, which he did. I didn't have the owners manual at the time or I probably wouldn't have bothered asking. Begs the question of which one to believe! Both my inlets are at 0.14, and one exhaust is 0.19, and the other 0.32. The valve with the 0.32 already has the largest 3.45 shim in it, so I'm up for a new valve...

Yes, you're right. I've not had the bike long and needed a few bits, so I contacted TM UK. I read the specs on their website, and then asked Mike to confirm, which he did. I didn't have the owners manual at the time or I probably wouldn't have bothered asking. Begs the question of which one to believe! Both my inlets are at 0.14, and one exhaust is 0.19, and the other 0.32. The valve with the 0.32 already has the largest 3.45 shim in it, so I'm up for a new valve...

 

The thickest shim is listed as 3.6mm which will get you back in the right range. But once you have such a big difference in shim sizes it is better to re-cut the seats and fit new valves. The normal wearing pattern is for the valve clearance to close. This is as a result of the valve pounding the seat and slight elongation of the valve stem. 

 

You could probably do with only a seat cut, but once you have gone that far on an old bike you might as well....

 

I have always set up TM 450s with 0,2mm inlet and 0.25mm exhaust.

Interesting about the shim size, a 3.60 would definitely get me out of trouble. A salesman I spoke to told me 3.45 was the biggest, but perhaps it was the biggest he had in stock. All the bikes other shims are around the the 3.3 to 3.4 range which gives me plenty of room for valve seat wear. The bike only had new valves put in recently by the previous owner.

 

I've pulled the head off because a retainer was broken on one of the inlet valves. I'm getting a bit frustrated trying to get parts. The local TM guy stocks hardly anything and cant find his box of shims'!!! There's a guy in Queensland who has a head gasket and retainer but getting them to return my calls is proving difficult..

 

Are you aware of shims from another bike brand/model that will fit? Thanks.

Unfortunately TM shims are smaller than the other common bikes. I believe that TM New Zealand Motoworks is on the ball. Postage should be OK for you.
