Can someone tell me the difference between the transmissions of the 2004, 2007, 2011, and 2012 bikes? Specifically is there any difference in the length of the gear shafts? And how many dog teeth does each year have? Any other details would be appreciated, thanks!

Pretty much any of the alloy frame bikes yz or wr will inter change trans parts. The steel frame bikes are interchangeable with each other. None of the gears or shafts will inter change between steel frame bikes and alloy frame. Can't say for sure about the 426 era bikes.

So that should be 2008- present wr450 and 2006-2009 yz450f most of the yzf gears seem to be the same in the 10-13 450's so it should be possible to build a wide ratio for those as well. If any one is looking I am putting a 2009 WR gearbox on e-bay next week

Drop me a line

2007 through present WR's share the same trans, and are interchangeable/mixable with the '06-'13 YZ450.  There are certain caveats.  The '10 and up output shaft and the splines under the same years' 4th "wheel" are different from earlier ones, but if used together, will interchange with the parts above.  The shaft and gear assemblies appear to be the same in the '14-'15 YZ450F, but the forks are new and not interchangeable (as far as I know right now).  This generation of transmissions is 12mm wider than the previous model 450's.

'03-'05 YZ450F and '03-'06 WR450F transmissions can be interchanged, but not mixed.  The YZ was a 4 speed in those years, so all you have available as an option is a complete swap of one into the other, shafts, gears, cam, forks, and all.

Earlier 426 and 400 models can be interchanged or mixed in a like manner, but won't fit any of the 450's without machine work.

What are we trying to accomplish?

gray, im building a 12 wr450 for supermoto , have the engine out and cases split, I hear the yz 1st and 2nd gear work better for pavement use as the wr 1st/2nd is too low, my question is, if I buy these 4 parts from the 07-08 yz450 film am I good or do I need more

1 Axle, Main 14t

2 gear 2dn pinion 15t

3 gear 1st wheel 27t

4 gear 2nd wheel 23t

Interesting but when you gear up your supermoto for street or track your first and second gear are taller. I have heard of using the fifth from the yz as its closer. But I don't think it would be great for the road.

ok everyone,, this question/thread is about transmission gearing , nothing to do with chain and sprocket gearing, ive been racing a yz450 for 3 years in sumo so I know the basics

looking at the WR trans last night the 1st gear pinion is 12 teeth, the YZ pinion is 14 , that alone scares me as 12 tooth gear looks small /weak and that's a lot of uderdrive in 1st ,

ive ordered the yz parts for about $300 and im going for it!

it looks like these parts may also be used in some yamaha streetbikes, maybe I could sell the WR 1st-2nd to someone who races their yz in hare scrambles? or to a sportbike that has been shifted rough and jumps out of 2nd?
