Max recommended RPM 03

I have an 03 450 and just bought a hour meter with a tach built in. It has an alert setting for the RPM and I need to know what I can set it at to stay off the rev limiter. I do not race and have no need to be bumping the rev limiter or even close. I have it set at 9400 right now. Is that close?

The standard limiter is a little over 11000 rpm peak power is around 8500 . Revving them much over 10 just uses them up quicker

Excellent. So I'm right on with setting alarm at 9400 then. I set it up and it works well. Not quite fast enough to give a linear response, like an analog guage, but good enough. Similar to a multimeter if anyone is familiar with that. I notice my ear set the idle low. Manual says around 1400_2000 I think. Mine was set around 975 and idles smooth, but is very easy to stall out at the current setting. I will bump it up just a bit. Thanks

The 450 may be different, but if I tried to get my 426 to idle at 975, it wouldn't do it.  Check your settings on the hour-meter/gauge and make sure there is not a switch that allows the selection of 2 stroke vs 4 stroke.

Wouldn't matter if there was.  YZF's fire every stroke, same as a two-stroke.  The spark that happens at the end of the exhaust stroke is just "wasted".

I was just thinking in the way the meter calculated RPM and the 975 rpm was really 1950 rpm (exactly double), where my bike loves to idle.  

 

Didn't know YZs fired every time. Learn something new every day. :)

Well, if he has it set on "4-stroke", that might cause it to read half as high as it really is running, but then I doubt he'd be able to get to an indicated 9400, don't you? ;)

It is set right. I had it set for the traditional four stroke setting and was able to hit 9000 rpm barely running up through the gears. Definitely wasn't right.

Yeah, 4500 happens pretty early on with a YZ450.
