problems starting 2004 wr450f ???

Recommended Posts

IF.... you are still completely stock, the jetting is probably a tad lean and it will be cold natured.

When trying to start the first time or when cold, try this:

make sure the gas is turned on, blip the throttle twice, pull out the choke and hit the start button.. don't touch the throttle until it cranks. Don't keep grinding on the starter any longer than 3 seconds. If it does not start try bliping the throttle one more time and hit the starter again. When hot starting, it's best not to touch the throttle at all and pull in the hot start. If it's luke warm, you might need to choke it, but again don't touch the throttle when starting.

If while cranking it "bottle pops" in the exhaust, chances are it needs more fuel.

Hope this helps, give it a try.

that is one of the most common questions i hear from buddies that get wr's. your carb has an accelerator pump in it. if you twist the throttle a few times BEFORE starting, it will shoot raw gas into the intake to help starting. it may take four or five twists. hit the button, twist again if it doesn't start yet. get the 72 starter jet indy mentioned (part no. 3TJ-1494F-16). have your dealer double check that number before ordering. as was written above, don't touch the throttle when starting. the t.p.s. will alter the ignition advance. alot of owners in cold climates kick start their bike the first start of the day. use a battery tender to keep the charge up if your not going to ride for a while.

Once I got my jetting sorted out, there was no need for a twist. I just put the choke on and crank and she usually fires up on the 2nd crank. Make sure you don't turn your ign. on before you do any twists on the throttle. Turn it on after you twist and just before you crank.

My bike is still completely stock and I have had the same problems mentioned above. I was at the dealer yesterday and explained the problems I was having starting the bike. I am going to drop it off tomorrow for them to play around with. I'm curious if they'll just quote this thread (?) and give me diff starting procuedures, or if they'll actually make some jetting changes.

Oh, I ordered tye gyt insert as well.

I highly recommend the doing all of the free mods and getting the JD jetting kit. It made my bike run 100 times better and much easier to start. My bike would barely run when I first got it - it ran so bad that I took it back to the dealer to make sure it was set up correctly. They messed with the mixture a little bit but still ran like crap. Once I did the free mods and jetting it was like night and day.

I am aware of the free mods, and I do plan on doing them eventually. But I'm a beginner rider, so I figured the bike in its stock state was still plenty for me. I haven't had any problems other than the cold starts.

btw, the '04 manual doesn't mention opening the throttle at all - just choke and hit the button. ?

72 starter jet! ?

I am a believer. :D :D

Dan, I adjusted the jetting as we talked about.

I didn't touch the paj or maj.

I installed a 68 starter jet. All I could get my hands on.

It started way easier. It wasn't perfect. But it started and ran. Unlike the start/stall...start/stall...start/stall that we are all familiar with. I am ordering the 72 starter monday.

It was still poping on deceleration with the 48 pilot with the fuel screw at 1 3/4 out. Might need bigget pilot yet.

But at least it ran. And ran good. No problems all day. Brought 4 spare plugs and they all stayed in the bag. :D

By the way ya all. This is in 20 deg weather for ice ridding.

Indy, enlighten me. I saw this post on Saturday, and needed to rejet anyway. Pulled the carb apart yesterday and looked all through the manual and couldn't find a mention of a starter jet. What/where/how?

Just for another datapoint, my bike was a smidge rich here in CO. Took it to Texas for a race a couple of weeks ago, and the jetting was spot-on. AND, as a bonus, the bike fired right up, on the starter, in the cold. After my rejet yesterday, it started up in my shop.

Now.. about that starter jet...
