New Guy with a WR400

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, new to the forum but not bikes. I've been out of the game for a couple years so decided to find another bike. I came across this 2000 WR400 and got a great deal. The bike is all original from the bars to the chain to the tires. It has an estimated 75hrs on it. Its been sitting for a while so I need to go thru the carb. It starts and idles with choke on but dies once you hit the throttle. Definitley needs a new chain! Not bad for $900.

Any bike in that condition for under $1500 is a steal!  Good job BB400.

Those early four strokes of the modern era were finicky.. they worked well, but everything had to be perfect: jetting, throttle and clutch adjustments, clean carb, etc.  Let us know how your project of gettign this bike running goes!

What bike did you have before this one?

As a kid I started on an xr200. In my adult years I had  a dual sport xr400. Then moved up to a crf450x that I sold during my health problems about 5 yrs ago. Now I'm on the this, couldn't pass it up. I'm more of a Honda guy, but blue runs just as good.

  • 2 months later...

Well its been a few months now and figured I would post an update. I went thru the whole thing and checked all the common/ normal things. Stripped it all down & cleaned the heck out of it, went thru about a dozen cans of brake parts cleaner. She runs like a bat out of hell. Feels just as fast as my old crf450x. Here is a list of things I've done. Figured I've got about $400 into it.

All fluids flushed and replaced

Rebuilt water pump

New o-ring chain and sprockets

Carb cleaned and jetted

Uni air filter

New petcock

Protaper bars, risers, pad & grips (still need the barkbusters)

Extended fuel mixture screw

Powder coated shock spring & clutch cover

Modified airbox

Heat wrapped header

Uncorked

Still planning on some new plastics and graphics.
