Quieter 2012 YZ450f

Recommended Posts

Hi Out There!

First time poster from Australia in need of some expert advice.

I've got a 2012 YZ450f and I'm looking for either an aftermarket slip-on muffler or end-cap that's noticeably quieter than stock, without killing off the power too much.

None of the manufacturers I've contacted can give me any real info an what their products do where noise is concerned and I really don't want to shell out hundreds of $$$ on a maybe.

What have any of you out there tried, what's worked and what hasn't?

Have you tried re-packing it?  Perhaps your silencer packing is just blown out / time to be replaced?  I can't think of any aftermarket pipes that would be any quieter than stock.  Maybe some forest approved silencers with a spark-arrester, but even then I doubt it would be much of a difference.

Yep.  Bike only has 30 hours and the packing is like brand new.

It's way louder than any enduro based pipes I've had in the past.

What about the FMF q muffler?

Yep.  That one keeps coming up, but FMF can't tell me much about it.  They say they don't test for sound stock v their pipes and reviews online vary all over the place so I'm guessing it depends on the bike it's going on.

Is there anyone out there that has tried one on a late model YZ450?

I have a fmf 4.1 with the "quiet core" and I love it

makes the bike super nice to ride .... you concentrate on riding and technique not on how loud your bike is

its a 450 so it has more than enough power

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the Q4 and it works a treat.

Exhaust note is not as high pitched and not as loud. ?

As a bonus the muffler is shorter than stock making it less venerable to crash damage.

Pro moto billit spark arrestor end cap with a silent or ultra silent insert. Check them out. http://www.promotobillet.com/p-18643-spark-arrestor-endcaps.html. it would be about $175 us but you can find the cheaper by searching online

I looked at those.  The end cap and insert are sold separately. Once you option it all up, with freight to OZ, the cheapest I found was nearly as much as a new slip-on.  So I went with the Q4 instead.  No regrets, it seems to have done the trick.

sweet. I scored a stock exhaust with only a couple hours and the end cap on it from ebay. Paid $120 with free shipping. That was for my '14 tho.
