Tuning woes 0n 2005

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

This is my first post as I have been reading old posts like crazy first to see if I can find something related to my problem.

My bike is a 2005 that was a standard UK model with 8000km.

I took the bike to my usual mechanic for a good full service.  He removed the AIS and fitted the performance jetting.  The idle jet is a 48.  The bike pulls cleanly and goes very well.  When it starts it idles fine, but as soon as the motor is warm it wants to die while making a very sick backfire like it is sucking air somewhere.  A sort of whistling noise before the pop.  The carb has been out numerous times and no leaks were found there or where the AIS was connected.

The battery is old and needs a charge after each test, but builds enough charge during a ride to use the e-start a couple of times.

Are there any other points to check and could the battery cause a bad idle somehow.  Valve clearances have been triple checked.

Thanks

AIS removed should be 45 pilot

You need to re-adjust your fuel screw; in fact you should get a remote fuel screw from R&D, then adjust it properly, starting with a very low idle on a hot motor

You need to check ALL  the jets for corrosion, especially the pilot AND clean the passage abovet he pilot jet with fishing line and spray cleaner

You need to replace the slide plates seal (dont put the palte in upside down: hole goes on the bottom)

You need to SERVICE THE HOT START pluger

Now, your symptoms are of either gas starvation (no vent in the gas cap) or a bad stator or stator pick up

Back in the good old days  (prior to drinking the kool aid), my 05 wr450 had a very similar problem.   Bike ran fine cold then like crap when warm.

For me, the problem was the spark plug coil.     That cleared it up right away.

Ouch.  I hope it is not that.  I might just make a standard coil up to test.

Update:  The guy that has been trying to get this sorted, has found an issue.  The PO serviced the carb and split the joint that is not supposed to split.  I blockage was found in the pilot circuit, but now the joint is not sealing well.  I suggested stag to help with the seal.

Anyone else had to repair that seal?  What did you use?
