Help setup a 15 bike

Recommended Posts

I was for the last years a KTM guy. After 6 years of racing or consistent riding break, i sold the 450sxf and i'm coming back with a 15 YZ450F. During this break period i had ride 8-10 times per year doing trails with friends on a 530EXC-R (a keeper for now) but it is nothing compared with the weekly rides for enhance and maintain riding performance.

I'm 6" tall and 190lbs. I still didn't ride the bike yet but bought already some stuff based on others users reviews: Galfer Tsunami 270mm rotor, Acerbis X-Brake cover and Fastway Evo Air for lowboy setup (love this setup on the Evo3 on my 530EXC-R). I wanted to see your advices for the following mods:

1. Dr.D lowering radiator and engine relocation kit to improve front grip and cornering. But can't this "issue" be fixed with front clamps height adjustment?

2. Ride Engineering Fork Compression Adjusters

3. PDHS (removed from my 450sxf before selling it) with custom mounts for it and to raise the bar 1". I'm also considering buying the Fasst Company Anti-Vibration Bar Inserts. This inserts also protects the end of the grips from damage. The idea of all this is to eliminate vibration over handlebar and delay arm fatigue.

4. Rekluse EXP 3.0 auto-clutch. Had the z-start pro on my 450sxf and it was a relief on rough track conditions like muddy or slippery terrain, to prevent engine stall during hard brake for slow corners. It also helped on arm fatigue since my 450sxf had only 4 gears and a huge torque due to some engine mods.

5. Suspension. Is the stock springs rate good for my weight?

6. Skid plate. Have not decided yet what to choose. I'm looking for lightweight, not carbon made, slim fit and oil drain hole.

I have the same bike. I will be using the stock springs...

-Rekluse works awesome on these bikes

-I dropped back down to a 49t rear

-I'm running 110mm sag with my forks slid down to the top of the fork tunes but not the caps

-I've been playing with maps and found +1 on fuel and ignition seems to work pretty good and prevent flame outs and easier starting. I have my idle between 2100—2150 due to the Rekluse

-Running the GYTR plastic skidplate and it works great

-Bike is tall and debating on having it lowered an inch

-I run my handlebars in the farthest forward post holes with the clamps turned backwards towards me. Running Renthal 996 Twinwalls with CB removed

Stock rear spring is a 5.9kg and at 190 pounds WITHOUT gear the ideal rate is 6.1kg.

Thanks for the feedback. What about the fork springs rate?

Your right. My weight is without gear.

Thanks for posting your bike setup. My bike has the sag at 100mm and the forks flushed with the clamps. The handlebar is at the same position than yours: further clamp position with mounts backwards. This put the handlebar aligned with the center of the forks.

About rekluse it is hard to find someone with it, specially on such newer bikes willing to share experience. On my 450sxf i had set at lower rpm and hard engagement. It also had the idle set a bit higher for better clutch engagement. How do you have yours set? What device do you use to adjust fuel and ignition maps?

I couldn't do 100mm of sag, I find too much oversteer so I'm constantly re-correcting. Spring rate is should be more then fine. I'm 220lb offroad expert and was excited that I don't have to put springs in a bike for the first time in my life...

I like instant engagement off idle, I run a little bit more idle with the lighter springs so it's slightly grabbing when I'm just sitting on the bike.

As for tuner, you will have to buy the GYTR tuner. It's stupid easy to use and in a sense dummy proof but I don't see you having to do much.
