does any one use there hot start button

Recommended Posts

I don't use mine as much since I have installed the BK mod...But when I stall it out of a corner or when I'm climbing a ledge at low rpm's and stall it. Dr.D hot start isn't to far away to grab it just so I don't have to kick it more than I have to....

Yep, I only need mine after a crash where the bike stays on it's side for a bit, but even then, usually 2-3 kicks gets it lighted up. BTW...rejetting helps starting tremendously, I am at sea level and went up to a 165 (162 stock) main and a 48 pilot and it starts like a dream now, I even start it in plain old shoes. This jetting works well in 60f-80f or so, and I even can run a 168 in 50f-ish weather....it pulls SO well on the top end when you richen it up for your conditions, before, my bike was "flat" on top and would never even aproach the rev limiter. Not that you need it, the 426 works very well if you ride it like a 4-STROKE. Just ask Dr. D ?

I have a 98 yz400 and have to use mine everytime i stall it or crash when the bike is hot. But then it starts after 1-2 kicks. I have stock jetting so maybe thats it. what have all of you done that helped this. BTW i have a friend that has a 99 wr400 that has the same problem.

My '01 426 is completely stock and it starts fine. I am usually wearing flip-flops when I start it to warm the motor after washing. Maybe the 400's didn't start as easy in general? It never gets below about 65 degrees where I ride and is typically over 80 degrees.

I do like the idea of a larger main jet when it gets cooler, I'll have to try that. I do notice that with the stock jetting it's a bit flat on top on the cooler days. Do you make any changes to the needle at the same time or do you just swap the jet and go?

I just "swap and go" ? I have not played with the needle clip yet, it runs better than stock jetting by far and I don't feel a need to mess with it. Unless I find or read something to suggest otherwise, I am sticking with the 165 or 168 main, and 48 pilot

I got my 01 426F at BSY Yamaha, (Dubach's roots) Scott, the guy who works on Dubach's bike's told me specifically: "Use the choke to start the bike the 1st time and never use the choke again that day and use the hotstart every time you restart the bike for the rest of the day"

I gotta tell ya, my bike starts 1st or 2nd kick every time I start it to go out for the next practice run and whenever I crash

Mine's a '98 YZ400. It'll start first or second kick with the choke when bone cold. The rest of the day it starts first kick with no choke or hotstart. The only time I need the hotstart is if it gets dumped and lays on it's side for a few seconds.

When I first got it, it would take 15-20 kicks when cold. Then after reading posts in this forum I found that my accelerator pump wasn't working at all. I cleaned up the diaphragm and actuating rod. Now it starts great when cold. This site is by far the most informative source of information I've seen. Even amongst the other TT pages (no offense to the other pages, or our moderators) I think it's just a credit to the crew here on YZ.

Whoops.....Adendum. When the bike is cold it requires the choke and two throttle openings to get some raw fuel into it. Prior to doing the P-38 mod it required one throttle opening. Guess this makes sense as the stroke has been shortened by the mod.

My dad got a Dr. D hot start at Cycle Gear for $50.00 bucks! Hes not the strongest or tallest so he has to use it, when he first got it sometimes i would have to start it for him ? , but he said it works great. Especially when you are on a hill or someplace ockward (however you spell that).

Just from habit, I will pop the choke on when first firing up my 01 426. It is habit as well to pull on the hot start after a ground pounder or stall. Bike usually fires on a single kick. If the bike sits between rides for at least 15 minutes, I'll start it up with neither choke nor hot start. I have heard from reliable sources that this is the way it is meant to work and your jetting is somewhat suspect if this is not so.

Then again, I could be wrong ?

As long as it starts up within a few kicks, no worries. I have no patience with kicking myself to death on any bike.
