Rub a little dry Moly Disulfide or graphite powder into the shock body threads when you put it together.

Unfortunately no, I don't have that kind of money right now. I have filed the threads, ordered up a new preload collar and will be making a spacer to go up top to move the collar away from the affected area. Hope this bandaids the problem for now. Will be on the hunt for a new shock next year. I had made a spacer for the bottom but after more consideration I don't think it would be the right place for it, so going up top with it.

. I hope you get it straightened out. Looks good.

Just went through the same thing sounds like you got it figured out my threads were worse than that and a thread file worked it's not perfect but it will get me riding again for now. How much did they charge you to make the spacer?

Bummer to hear your went thru this as well, never experienced this and never taught I would from a new bike. I made the spacer myself, machinist by trade. I am modifying it currently to make it work up top vs at the bottom. After careful consideration I feel the spacer in the bottom might not be the best spot for it as it actually changes spring height, maybe it won't affect anything and maybe it will idk. But if I put it on top it won't affect the spring height or anything that has to do with the function of the shock. Playing it safe. If you would like a spacer made let me know and I'll see if I can make another one.

I would absolutely love it if you could make me one we can figure out some sort of payment method out. I am in the same boat sending the shock out right now doesn't really fit into my budget at the moment so a half way fix to keep me riding has got to be my solution for right now. I have a couple ideas I was thinking could work since I was able to clean the threads up enough to twist the rings across the damages threads but your solution is much better than any thing I was going to do. Let me know and thank you.

You can message me if you want but I have never done that through thumper talk so it might take me minute to figure it out and yea I agree it is a major bummer. I did it half through the summer and just pulled it apart since there is snow on the ground now I really did a number on a few of the threads.

Sounds good, if possible could you post a picture of yours. Curious to see what it looks like, how bad is it, and it would give me an idea of how big to make the spacer.

The spacer will have no effect on shock operation regardless of whether it's on the top or the bottom.  It's not the height of the spring on the shock that matters, it's the pre-loaded length, and positioning the spacer on either end of the spring will not change that, assuming it's the same spring and the sag is set right.

The only valid considerations would be any kind of clearance issues that might arise, and the question of sprung vs. unsprung weight.  On that last point, mounting the spacer on top would be preferable, since then it would be sprung weight.  Even on the bottom, the effect of the unsprung weight is minimal because the shock itself is so far forward on the swing arm, and because the shock travels only about a third as far or fast as the wheel does.

Looks exactly like mine and in the same spot with about the same damage. Here's the revised spacer for the top of the shock. Crossing my fingers everything works good.ImageUploadedByThumper Talk1418935383.427647.jpg
