Added a power port to the DR-Z

Recommended Posts

Bought a chinese power port on Ebay.  [Ebay LINK here]  I would swear that this was made for the DR-Z by the way the wire length was perfect.

It comes with two spare fuses, a surface mount, a bar mount, and a couple of USB silicone boots that you can add to your cord to keep dirt out of the port.  I was very impressed at the engineering that went into this little gizmo.  Great value for $11.  As long as you don't mind waiting for it to ship from China.

I mounted the unit on the right side of the bar, where it is protected by the brake reservoir.  The bar mount comes with three rubber strips to adjust to different bar sizes.  I used all three.

the wire was routed down the bar, behind the headlight, along the right side of the frame (away from the coil), left side of subframe, and connected at the + terminal and frame ground.  The frame ground I used is between the shoulder bold that mounts the battery box, and the aluminum sub frame.  The bolt is black, but the subframe is bare, which makes for a good connection.

I bought a USB port similar to this but I wired it to the orange wire at the ignition so when you flick the key you have power to the USB port. And it was far less wiring! I stuck it on the stem right next to where the all the wires lead up from the rear of the bike (almost opposite to the oil dipstick). If I was near my bike i would take a photo but I'll show you an old picture of how my phone looks on my bike ImageUploadedByThumper Talk1414202392.362009.jpg

Someone on bamarides.com pointed out to me that the 5v circuitry actually draws a small amount of power even when nothing is connected.  I checked it with a meter, and sure enough, it drew 16.2 miliamps.  So I rewired it to a ground wire behind the headlight, and the brown wire coming from the switch (parking light wire).  Now it completely disconnects when the key is off.
