2012 leaving WR450... Going back to a YZ

Recommended Posts

On your 07 ? 'nuff said. 2012+s are different beasts.

I have no idea how that statement has anything to do with what I was talking about. Nuff said......now.

I am so different than the next guy. Everyone likes there bikes setup for them. I can say what works for me but can't say it will work for anyone else. Anybody that tries to do that is an utter fool and doesn't understand the basics to riding. Again, one mans opinion.

22mm TCs feel different on a 2012 than they are on an 07.   Different starting geometries, changing the offset does different things.

Just saying that your opinion of 22mm TCs on an 07 has zero to do with putting 22mm TCs on a 2012.

OP is looking for an agile 450.  22mm TCs make a big difference on a 2012 WR450F.

If your racing or on a track the YZ is the way to go. If your off-roading and want a good bike to off-road on WR is a great choice. There is no getting around the fact that a track bike set up for the track and contions will always win out. But off roading your not racing and the conditions are not controlled. And you're not pushing it to the extreme. And if you are maybe you do need a YZ. For me I'm not racing and I wouldn't trade my E-Start for anything. And the headlight comes in handy for those night rides

The part I like most about my WR is how smooth it is in slow rocky creek beds or even fast open quad trails littered with rocks. I think the weight actually helps there and keeps the bike planted while pushing forward.

The biggest down fall is trying to go fast in super tight single track trying to pop logs, or using rocks as little booters to clear another oncoming obstacle. The YZ450 just feels so much more nimble in those situations.

There has to be a happy medium and if I had the money to build the perfect off-road bike it would be a 50-50 split between the two. Yamaha just needs to get their stuff together and make one for all of us!

Losing the electric start is really gonna suck!! :banghead:

See my sig.

I've also revalved the rear suspension.  WR shocks have a serious limitation built into the comp adjuster valve.

WIth the cam my bike stalls so little and starts so well that there is no way I'd consider the weight penalty of eStart.

I know you are a Yami fan, as am I, but people say great things about the CRF450 for woods as well as the KX450F for general off road riding.  Supposedly the CRF has the nimblest geometry.  I've never ridden one.

PS: its not expensive to revise a WR.

it's also not expensive to just buy a yz and make some minor mods to make it more woodsy. it's certainly easier, cheaper, and less time consuming than what you did.   especially if a tight woods race bike is the goal.

it's great that you love you wr, but i think it's easier that you list the bikes you've actually got experience on, than it is to list the bike you don't have experience on. because i think the majority of folks that have owned and ridden more than one bike in the last 25 years would agree the WR450 is one of the more heavy platforms to start with when building a competitive off-road race bike.  a race bike is not for everyone,  so it sounds like the WR suits your skills and terrain quite well now. good for you, but don't expect others to follow, as their are much easier routes to take than spending nearly a year and who knows how many hours modifying a bike so that your skills can handle it.   just saying...

gdamit I never said the bikes suck

Quit putting words in my mouth

My opinion is valid as is yours

Quit trying to stir up trouble

Uh, you're the one that made the ridiculous claim that KTMs are crappy offroad race bikes, unless you're slow and/or don't weigh over 200 lbs. KTM's offroad racing pedigree speaks for itself. David Knight is over 200 lbs and fast a shit, and he dominated on a KTM 450 before jumping ship, and really hasn't ever since... hmmm.

The weight does keep it stable and from deflecting in some situations for sure. But like you said, when it comes to tight gnarly single track, that weight just works against you.

There is a happy medium.. KTM 350 XC-F or XCF-W  :ride:

Krannie has been riding a KTM 350 for the last few weeks.   That is why he is trying to get his WR running again.

LOL  as if anything you say about any other bike than your wr450 matters. u admittedly have no experience on anything but that bike in the last 25 years. that 350 would run circles around your wr frankenbike.

You are clueless!

The 350 is a little flimsey toy compared to WR.

I OWN BOTH

I'm so tired of this un-informed talk about KTM's being something special.

They are light, they look trick, and are styled extremely well.

But they are NOT heavy duty, robust, or high-performance!

Enough already.

So you're the expert on all things KTM, but we're uninformed? Yeah right.

You know what? I own a WR and KTM too! And I've ridden a 350 XC-F and it flat out hauls the mail. "Flimsy" is hardly a word I'd use to describe it.

If you want a big heavy tank that is 'ride it hard, put it away wet' reliable with minimal maintenance, a WR is a great choice. So is the CRF450X, but you already knew that.

But not high performance? Give your head a shake Spec for spec, KTM offroad bikes smoke WRs and CRF-Xs and that's a fact. My 250 XCF-W is a WAY higher performance machine than a WR250 (yes I've ridden several) or my former CRF250X. Night and day difference, my KTM smokes them hands down. Lighter, faster, more power, better ergos, better suspension, etc. Will it require more maintenance? Yeah, so what? Worth every penny, IMO.

Again look no further than GNCC/WORCS, EnduroX, hard enduros, you name it. Gobs of KTMs in all sizes and 2/4 strokes. Next to zero WRs or CRF-Xs. If there are blue and red bikes, they're MXers woods out.

Some choose reliability over outright performance, some choose performance over everything else. There is no right or wrong here, just different needs, and plenty of different bikes to choose from to fill those needs.

LOL you got one thing right, the only place on earth the WR450 beats out a KTM350 in an offroad race situation is in a WR forum.  just admit the 350 just might be too much for you, lol

either one of the bikes i have in my garage would likely smoke your wr in an offroad race, with equally skilled riders aboard that is.   *wink*

I wonder how many people on this forum actually race their bikes. If I thought for a minute a KTM 350 was so boss I would have to own one. But not no and no especially the EXC weak. But hey that's me.

Funny how you and GP1K are both from Washington state and both show up in the same threads, spouting the same stuff.  Coincidence ?

Again, all talk, no action.

You are making claims you will never follow up on, so your claims are meaningless.

You will never come to SoCal and ride with us, which I invite you to do right here and now.......

....we're waiting....
