Ideas for spacer on rear shock.

So I have Been putting off fixing my rear shock the preload ring is cross threaded I am going to cut the ring off and put a spacer either bellow the spring or above it to move the the rings above the damaged threads. My questions are does it matter what end I put the spacer below or above spring and any ideas what I could use as a spacer. Any help or ideas for this project would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
