In my old 86 XR600 shop manual Honda says to use Automatic Transmission Fluid for the forks. Does anyone know the difference between ATF and other fork oils? Viscosity differences?

I used to ATF all the time back in the 70's & early 80's. Until about a year or two ago, I was using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in my XR650R forks with pretty good results. It's about a ~10wt fluid if you dig into the specs.
