A coupe of newbie questions

Recommended Posts

1. Do you guys all use a coolant catch can?

2. My bike was overheating and I see coolant on the right side radiator but the hose that comes out of left radiator seems empty. How do I fix this?

3. Bikes idles good and rides good but if I come to a rapid deceleration it cuts off.

4. Do you guys recommend the magura clutch? I was riding today and the clutch was killing me.

Thank you in advance

I installed a Boysen water pump and impeller and that solved all my over heating problems, but I know many do run a coolant catch can.

I'm not really sure what you mean by the second question so let's just skip that one

What are you doing on this deceleration? If you're pulling the clutch in and braking hard it should be fine. Also when bike are you riding? I would check the carb anyways and possibly rejet

I'm fine with my clutch. After a while of riding you get used to it.

1.No, stock overflow bottle

2.It overheats probably because it is too lean

3.FI or carb?

4. Absolutely not. Unless you never want to learn how to properly use the clutch.....and just want it 'easier' then, get one.  Just ride more.

Are you confusing the magura with the rekluse?

No.

While the hydralic clutch is easier, it is not as linear across the engagment point, IMHO.

It is a 2008 carb.

By no coolant on the left side hose I mean that the left side radiator sems to be empty.

How can you know this, as there is no radiator cap on the left

Oh, I never rode a bike with a hydro clutch.  I drove a few older cars with mechanical clutches and I think I know what you mean.  You could sort of feel it in the pedal when the clutch engaged in the older cars while the pedal feels numb on the hydro clutch cars.

1.  yes use the coolant overflow reservoir.  Nice to have if you overheat.

2. If your bikeoverheated and spit out coolant maybe your radiators are not full. Pull radiator cap off when it is cold.  Start bike and run.  Add coolant as it is running to fill it completely.  Put on radiator cap after it appears you have filled all  you can fill.

3.  Check jetting, float valve, idle speed, etc to make sure it is running properly.  If you lock up the rear brakes without pulling inthe clutch you can manage to stall it, but it shouldnt be easy to do.

4.  As torquey as the WR450F is, I dont understand why the clutch would be killing you.  You should not have to clutch it a lot unless you are on really tight single track.  If so, you might have to lower the gearing to reduce the clutching required.  What front and rear sprockets are you running? Or did  you mean the clutch pull is really hard and requires too much effort?  If so, check the clutch cable, lube, adjust as necessary.  If that doesnt do the trick, you might have to pull off the clutch cover and see if you have other issues going on.  It really should not be difficult and not require going to Magura hydraulic clutch.

If all this is a result of really difficult trails, then you might want to consider a Rekluse autoclutch.

Thank you, you are on the spot. Yes really tight course.

I have a Husaberg FE450 with Magura hydraulic clutch and I have a WR450F a normal clutch but the ASV unbreakable levers.  The Magura is a bit smoother to operate on the Husaberg, but definitely not worth spending extra money for.  My buddy that rides a WR450F commented how it helps to more smoothly engage especially on steep stuff when he did some riding on the Husaberg.

After commenting about the smooth release of the Magura hydraulic clutch, my buddy ended up going a different direction and spent his money on a used Z-Start Pro autoclutch and loved it (I think he paid about $300-$350 used).  We sometimes swap bikes to try out other equipment and I liked riding his WR450F so much, I bought a used one this past winter.  And I also liked the Rekluse autoclutch so much that I snapped one up off Craigslist when it posted locally.  He probably thinks I am copying him (like a teen girl), but I know a good thing when I ride it.  My Husaberg has been collecting dust in my garage all summer.

The Rekluse Z-Start Pro, I bought used for $280 off CL and had it for our last 3 day ride down in the San Juans of Colorado and I loved it.  Two of the days were 8 hours + rides on single track where we barely covered 40 miles in the entire day.  They were tough days, but would have been miserable without the autoclutch.  One of guys I regularly ride with noticed how much faster I was riding than previously (he rides a KTM 300 XC-W (and might be seriously considering trying a Rekluse autoclutch as well).
