Anyone mounted the apparently new 2012+ Mugura Hydraulic Clutch lever assembly?

I have a Magura on mine.  Not sure if its the "new 2012+" model.  Put it on last fall (2013).  Special ordered the 9.5mm master piston.  Had to fiddle with it to get it set right, but its been hassle free and it works great.

I rode my friend's 2012+ Magura for 9 hours, clearing trail. Zero issues. I wouldn't say it's the same as my KTM in overall feel, and that's to be expected, but it's a good improvement over stock for my buddy.

Looks like mine, minus the red thing, whatever it is.

 

They are a pain to bleed and set up right.  Find a hose and syringe that fits on the slave cylinder bleed valve and push oil up through it to the master.  2 person job, especially if the starter is in the way.  Stock up on some shimming washers too.  You have to watch that the slave can "swivel" as the clutch arm pulls in or you'll bend the piston or the seals will leak.

 

That model probably comes with the 10mm master.   The 9.5mm master pulls easier, but there is *just* enough slave travel with it, ie it needs to be adjusted well for it to work.  Worth the effort for the lighter pull, IMHO.

 

I find the Magura clutch really improves the control in tight terrain.   Its very predictable and comfortable, even if the pull is a bit higher than on some other bikes.

 

I had to call/email the Magura rep to get the 9.5mm master piston.

FWIW, the fancy lever adjuster is of practically no use because you never have to adjust the lever with this clutch setup.   It self adjusts by adding hydraulic fluid to the circuit every time to you pull it in.  

 

Also, don't be alarmed if there is a tiny bit of air/mushiness in the system when you start using it.   It self bleeds as you use it, ie air will make its way up to the master cylinder over time.

 

One other thing, replacement levers are expensive and hard to find.  I've never broken one.

Spoke to Magura today.

 

The 2012+ version comes with the 9.5mm diameter piston'd master cylinder. The system is pre-beld and installation should be drama free.

 

Should have before weekend so will be able to report on installation. Not sure when I'll have a chance to ride with it but will report when I do.

Ordered it Tuesday form RM ATV/MC and received it today (Thursday)....not bad. Good price as well $238 shipped. Magura have made some updates compared to earlier versions I've seen for WRs and other bikes. Will post pics in a while.

I'd be curious if they have, as I had the pleasure (NOT!) of being the guinea pig with new WRs. I had the 10.5 master originally, but switched to the 9.5 and that's why they changed that for new WRs. You're welcome. :)

What model MC do you guys have. The new one is model 167. The older version was a 164....I believe (which had the red span adjuster).

 

Not sure what you mean by useless MLCG. The adjuster sets the span (position) of the lever. Of course the MC is self adjusting...that way by design...all hydraulic clutches are. The adjuster allows you to position the clutch lever wherever you need based on your hand size or preference. Nice feature.

 

I waited for a 2012+ specific version as I knew you guys would work all the bugs out :thumbsup:

 

Looking forward to getting in mounted up this weekend.

BTW, there are many sources for levers. KTM has used the clutch jack and many companys make replacement levers. I run a DRC folding lever on mine.

Started the installation tonight...holy shit! What a royal PITA!

 

First off - no room to work in there at all (might have to pull the subframe and shock to get this thing installed properly).  Secondly - the instructions are crap...not bike specific. This wouldn't be a problem if the installation was intuitive. It's not!

 

There is a new slave cylinder bracket that needs to be installed in lieu of the stock one. Not obvious which way it should be oriented. If you mirror the stock position there is no room for the slave cylinder....starter motor is in the way. Which way does the clevis pin go? Up, down?

 

If any of you have a Magura installed can you take a couple of pictures of the slave cylinder and post them up here? Would be greatly appreciated.

I just need a couple of photos of how you've attached the slave to the case bracket and actuation arm as the parts I've got do not make sense.

 

Magura should definitely rectify his with a photo or two. As they say...a picture is worth a thousan....you know.

This is my setup. Wr450'06. I know, its an older bike but maybe this is helpfull.
P.s. I did bend the bracket a littele bit upwards.

Thanks SW!   Looks like you re-routed the hydraulic line down the LH side of the bike in lieu of the RH side.Was this for clearance, line length?  And, you used the stock bracket for the slave cylinder. Did the 06 kit not come with a replacement bracket?

Not sure if this helps or hurts but I know someone with a 07 and it didn't fit right. They ended up getting a new slave cyl. bracket made.

Not sure if *any* KTM lever fits, but yes make sure you do mention 'Magura' as KTM has since switched to Brembo.

Really looking for a 2012+ photo of this same area

I re routed the line because of the exhaust pipe. I did't want to take a risk of melting. The lenght was/is ok. The YZ types all routed the line down the LH side. I did't get a replacement bracket, but the bend upwards is minimal. Good luck
