I am looking at 04 yz450 that was slipping out of gear. I pulled off the clutch and went down through the gears and the shift selector keeps rotating clockwise or counter clockwise when changing gears and passes 1st or 4th depending if you are going up or down. I am going to dig into it a littl more tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has seen this before.

Passes 1/4 and stays there?  Shouldn't matter as long as the groove in the shift cam runs straight beyond that point so that the fork doesn't move.

The problem with gears not holding in under a load has to do with the locking lugs of the gear wearing round, then forcing themselves out of engagement, bending the fork in the process.
