ARRA Action AlertBLM proposes national land management changes. The
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is creating a new national land management
document which updates its vegetation treatment and land management
practices. BLM has scheduled nineteen (19) meetings in 12 states and
Washington, D.C., from late January to March 12, 2002 to discuss a proposed
environmental Impact Statement (EIS) addressing changes in land management
on BLM lands in the western states, including Alaska. You can help insure
that BLM considers input from recreationists by:Attending a meeting.
Submitting comments at a meeting or in writing before the March 29, 2002
deadline.Putting your name on the "Stakeholder Mailing List" to receive
mailings by calling BLM at 775-861-6645.See the BLM Revised Schedule
of Meetings below, to find the meeting closest to you. Mail or fax your
comments to:Brian Amme, Project ManagerBureau of Land ManagementPO Box
12000Reno, NV 89520-0006FAX: 702- 861-6712[There is no Internet access
to BLM at this time.]This national management document will be the basis
for land management decisions made in 16 western states: Alaska, Arizona,
California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, North and South
Dakota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. It will
address land management activities, such as prescribed fire, understory
thinning, removal of fuels available for wildfire, plant and stream
restoration and efforts to remove invasive plants and weeds. At the
meeting you should comment on BLM's proposal. This is your opportunity to
get to know your local BLM field office staff. This is also BLM's
opportunity to meet you, responsible outdoor recreationists, in a neutral
setting. Your comments should stay on topic. Although this is not a land
use plan, it is important when drafting comments to share your concerns
with BLM staff in a way that invites them into a continuing dialogue with
you.Topics for discussion with BLM staff:How do they anticipate
vegetation treatments will affect our access to trails and trailheads? For
example, if part of the vegetation treatment plan involves aerial spraying
of herbicides, ask how and when you will be notified of the details of the
spraying operation. Ask whether maps will be available.Ask BLM staff to
provide you with the details of how they intend to communicate with you and
individuals who may be visiting the area.Speak of the need for outdoor
recreation in your community. Give specific details of your experiences and
your family's experiences. If available, share particular details of any
volunteer trail maintenance projects you may have done in the past or are
currently involved with in your riding area.Give specific examples of
joint projects your club may have done with another group.Ask how you can
assist them in weed control. For example, ask whether they will have wash
stations or brushes for OHV's and horses coming off the trail. Ask whether
they need assistance from your club in maintaining their OHV equipment.
Investigate ways to prevent possible spread of weeds from one area to
another area. Be ready with ideas for cooperation.ARRA would appreciate
receiving your feedback about the meeting youattended. Please write to us
