What is you favorite dual sport kit for WR450, and why?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm completely unimpressed with the first impression made by the TT store.

I figured in support of the site, I'd order what parts they offer through them. I did that on Monday. It took them until Thursday to actually ship 2 very small in-stock parts.

The remainder of the parts TT didn't offer I ordered from Rocky Mountain atv- on Wednesday. They're on my kitchen counter as of an hour ago.

Anyone else have any problems with slow processing time with TT? I really want to do more business with them in support of this great forum and site they've provided for us, but 4 days stalling trashed my entire weekend plans and time allotment..

All done. The thing is stupid, ignorant fast. I'm still having the bike stall when blipping the throttle off idle, while sitting still. It also starts hard. I used:

JD red jet, 5th clip down, 170 main, and 48 pilot, totally per the instructions, as I'm 600 feet ASL and generally hot and muggy here in central AR.

Used R&D remote idle mixture screw

And Boyesen Quickshot 3, timed correctly.

I'll have to monkey with it after work tomorrow. I'm thinking the transition from idle circuit to pilot is what's causing it, otherwise it runs fantastic.

I couldn't figure out if the O-ring mod was necessary with the Quickshot, so I left it out.

Baja Designs hands down. Nobody else even comes close.

Support is second to none

The company has been around for quite a while so they will be there when you break a part

....try getting a replacement part from an XYZ dual sport conversion kit a couple years down the road.

Oh yeah, and they are an american company based in CA

Don't know if it would make a difference but IMO the 170 is too fat of a main. I have ways run a 168 and I would also suggest the 4th clip down and see if that cures your stalling issue.

I got it all ironed out, just getting the idle circuit in synchrony with the pump shot circuit fixed it up. Ended up O-ringing the AP anyways, works better than it did. Bike runs terrific and hits hard in every gear.

Now to pick out a DS kit.

Did you see the group buy that Thumpertalk is doing on the Baja Designs kit?

Yes, sir.. I seen that, and while it's definitely a great deal, there's aspects of the BD kit I don't particularly care for.. From my research, it's looking like Sicass has the diversity and least invasive kit to offer. I'm not 100% that I'm gonna go with them, I may actually call BD (provided I ever get the time) and see about a custom build, mix-match type thing that will utilize the best (for me) features of all the kits.

As far as least invasive, how did the Tusk kit compare. A friend of mine put one on his 450X and has had no issues. Being as it is RMATV's in-house setup, I'd think they'd stand behind it pretty well ?

For my 2013 WR450F, I wanted a kit with an ignition switch so I was limited to Baja Designs.

The BD kit is nice and the best option from the ones I saw... although two things were lacking for me with the BD kit

- no license plate light

- the turn signal rocker switch does not have a cancel function.   This fact coupled with no turn signal indicator makes me check it all the time

I can't believe that no one recommended the Trick Dualsport kit.  I have had mine since my 2003 WR 450 was new and have never had a moments trouble with it. It is small, easy to install, does NOT need the stator altered and will last and last. It can be done with the factory lights or with aftermarket. The best part is Dale can and will help with any questions which might arise. Check it out at www.trickdualsport.com. You will be glad that you did.       Jim

  • 7 months later...

The tusk kit has an entirely seperate wiring harness for everything but the headlight.

Its working out for me, because I only need to get it roadworthy in order to pass an inspection so can can plate the bike and run enduro events. I dont intend to ride on the street often.

The wiring harness is high quality, and the only modification required is to cut into the headlight wires (because the headlight needs to run off the stator) I havent had it long, but the LED signals should last a while. The horn and mirror are cheap, but I see no reason they shouldnt last a while as well.

The tailight took some drilling on the piece provided, but I was able to use the existing WR mounts and it fits up nicely. LED tailinght is brighter than my Harleys tailight. (Which isnt saying much.)

for my use, this kit is a great value.

Maybe later Ill upgrade the stator for a brighter light, do a full DC conversion etc, but thats for another day...

The Baja Designs Kit is the way to go hands down.

It can be explained in 1 word: Support

Will the other companies be around in 5 years when you need a spare part?

Try calling them. They are so accomodating and helpful I dont even have words.

Yeah, Baja's solution is a bit more complicated but it also leaves you with a true headlight that works properly

If its just about making the bike barely road legal, maybe not.

Karahnee has a great idea, go LED

LEDs draw 1/5 the power and probably can be done without a stator rewind

I went Tusk and Ryco on my 250, Simple and if it eats a harness, 30 bucks and I got a new one. I use the Ryco plate adapter, BD key and a Super bright LED for lic plate light. Super easy and works great.

On my 450, it's modified Ryco kit and I may swap in a Tusk harness to clean it all up.. The Ryco kit is great for the barely legal kit, but would not pass mustard in a California test, so I messed with it to make it work. After doing 3 D/S kits, I got it down and I can make them factory like!!
