Best mud/slippery woods tires ?

I ride a lot in muddy and "slippery woods" conditions.  Lots of wet, slippery roots.  No motocross, no desert.  

 

I ride a lightened WR450.

 

What is the best tire for me ?   I'm considering an IRC M5B and a Bridgestone M203/4.

 

What widths should I use ?

The best slippery root and wet clay tire I've found are the radial ply Trials tires like the Dunlop 803, Michelin X, and X-Lite; all tubeless 4.00R18 size.

 

For wet clay I run them at, or just below, 4psi so they will self clean.

 

In the wet PNW you get accused of cheating if you run any of the above tires.  :p

Pirelli Scorpion XCMS.  Soft sidewall tire.  Grips like it is on tracks.  Race spec tire.  Front will not last but it performs!

The M5B is like a tractor tire. I've run the 130's & the 140's. The latter lasts longer.

I ordered a 140 M5B and an M1A today.   I'll report back how they work. Anything would be better than the worn MX51s I used last year.

I use a Dunlop D803 trials tire or a Pirelli MT-16.

 

The D803 is a cheater tire.

We air them down like trials tires. They use very little air when new a pound or two due to the sidewall being stiff. It helps it to not spin and round the edges when new. After one or two rides we then we put a little more air in still keeping the sidewall still squishy. Haven't had any pinch flat problem the tires have a lot of sidewall. They also perform well to knobby cut knifes to sharpen the knobs when worn.

I ran the 140 M5B in snotty conditions on the weekend.  It hooked up way better than the (worn) MX51 did.  Many fewer kick outs too, although there was one or two. 

 

I'm still running the MX51 in the front.  I was frequently losing the front end until I aired it down to about 4 PSI.  I am going to replace it with the M1A later this week.

 

I was riding with a guy who was testing an S12 on the front of his bike.  He fell many times.  Not sure if it was him or the bike's fault.

Sure.  It costs twice as much and lasts half (or less) as long.  If you ride in rocks, cut knobs are the norm.

 

For everyday, non competitive riding, I think the M5B will be fine.

Signman606 has a standard GT216, you should ask him how it's holding up. It would surprise you...

Great for motocross, not so much for woods.  Woods have hill climbs, roots and slippery rocks.

I like how Paul emphasizes that you have to cut power going over wet roots.  So true.   Basically carry the front over and cut the power to the back going over.

Signman606 has a standard GT216, you should ask him how it's holding up. It would surprise you...

 

There are several incarnations of the GT216, from a bit softer to normal, to the gumball.
