Well I finally got my 99 WR plated and just started hitting the streets. My gearing is stock 14:50 and it is screaming pretty good in 5th gear around 45mph. Has anyone else found a happy medium for on off road? I was going to drop a tooth in the front but wanted to get some input first. Does it make a difference if dropping a tooth front or rear? I planned to try a 13 up front and see what that does but don't want to buy anything till I get a couple opinions first. Thanks

Going to a 13 will make it worse

14/50 is the best gearing for dual sport, unless you don't climb; then you can go 14/46

+1 up front, -1 on the rear, works like a charm on my 450.

I had an old DR 350 and I think the engine is just a whole bunch different, heavier flywheels, etc

You could LUG that thing like no tomorrow. I geared it TALLER than stock and it worked really nice in the woods

and it had a higher top speed on the Hiway

It didn't work out quite the same with the WR

The engine is a slightly detuned YZ, and as such is much more high strung and MX oriented

I doesnt like to lug, plain and simple

so if you gear it any taller instead of lugging over those roots and rocks, it just simply stalled when I geared the WR taller

Went back to 14/50 and made the clutch pull much softer (replaced 3 or the springs with 250 springs) and started to use clutch more

With 14/50 i can hit almost 90 MPH on the hiway.....how fast do you want to go !! ??

It will haul ass. It just seemed like it is reving pretty high at 45 already. If I can run 60 and it doesn't sound like it's going to explode I would be happy. I guess I have to realize that it is a "dirt bike" and not a street bike. Just seems like the thing is SCREAMING at on road speeds.

We run 15/50 on our bikes down in Baja. Most of us have Rekluse's, so with an auto-clutch, 1st gear isn't much of an issue as the clutch will slip enough to compensate for the tall 1st.

Same here. Running 13-50 was thinking 13-46 but that may be too much off the back. Plenty of throttle left but the engine seems high in the rpm's. Looking for suggestions as well.
