2012 WR450f rear brake light conversion... help

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody! This is my first time here. So i recently bought a 2012 WR450. I got the dealer to hook me up with a street legal title and reg. My issue is that when I first bought the bike, the previous owner had taken off the headlight, instrument cluster, and taillight, and replaced them with YZ parts. I'm wondering what it would take to convert the tail light to a brake light so I can ride the bike on the street. (Not that I don't anyway, but at 17 I don't need my insurance hassling me any more. <_< ) I've seen a few different threads about people doing this, but I cant make sense of what I need to do or what wires I need to splice into. If someone could help that would be great. Thanks and happy riding!

So in this picture I noticed that there are 3 wires on the plug of the actual taillight but only 2 on the plug on the bike. I assume this blank is the switch wire? I just don't know where to start right now.

I can't remember if the stock taillight is hooked to the bright setting or the dim one.  I hooked my switches to one of the brown wires I think for switched power.

Ok thanks a lot guys! I found a few options on ebay for less than 10$. I just need to find a thread match for the banjo bolt. Anyone know off the top of their head what size the threads are for the '12 WR450 front master cylinder banjo bolt? 10x1.25 or 1mm?

If you live in a 'strict' state like I do, you need front & rear brake light, blinkers, hi/lo headlight, kickstand, a key switch.....the whole 9 yards

You travel 20 miles from my house and go to New Hampshire ans all you need is a red light on the back, no brake light.....very lenient

I am a big fan of having a road legal dirtbike, and it seems you are too

If you ever get caught in, should we say a compromised situation, of where you should be riding

a cop or an EPO has a lot less to work with as far as charging you with various things

All that said, me and many of my friends have been this route before

Go to the one and only place, Baja Designs

1) Right equipment, 2) Replacement parts if you break them 3) Support in installing

Yes the blank is for the switched brake light...

Black wire = grouf

Blue wire = 12v+ running light

Yellow wire = 12v+ switch brake light

You can get the OEM connector pins and rubber dust seals to do your wiring the right way from K&L Supply.  I think they are on page 119ish of the current downloadable catalog.

I'm not trying to bust 'em on anyone, but if you go with piece-mealing things off of ebay it will eventually come back to haunt you.

If you bust a particular part, you will most likely have to do some craft work to get another dis-similar part to work

(99% of time that Chinese supplier is gone in a year or two)

If you cant find the same rear tail light, and if you don't mind swiss-cheezing your rear fender with 2 or 4 more holes....all the power to you

If the part has a different pin-out and you don't mind getting an ohm meter and screwing around with it for a couple more hours

Or, if you buy a POS handlebar switch or hydraulic pressure switch that breaks annually and don't mind replacing it, fine

I buy all my hardware from Baja Designs.

They have been around for a long time and are unlikely to go anywhere

The support is second to none

One stop shopping

Note: I do not work for these guys or even have a friend that does or anything, ....but I like them that much.

Yeah i really like the idea of a kit, but unfortunately, I cant afford one of those things, not to mention i'd have to do a lot to take all the stuff back off to use it as a dirtbike. I do a lot of pounding whoops in the desert, so any extra weight and fragile plastic stuff would be the death of me. This isn't going to be a permanent supermoto project. That's why I'm just going to stick to modding stock parts to work "good enough" and having nothing extra. And as far as I know, I can get away with no turn signals or hi/low beam or anything in my state, so that's what ill have to do.

If you want a light, easy to replace if broken, proven setup then do this:

1.) Buy a TRX450R front master cylinder.  This uses an electrical switch to activate the brake light that is part of the master cylinder.  The master will bolt up to the stock handlebar on the '12 WR450.

2.) You can use the 12v+ wire that powers the useless little 3w light bulb underneath the main headlight bulb.

3.) Then run a single 12v+ wire back to the connector you had shown in your original post that is next to the ECU.  Put it on the pin with the yellow wire that goes to the brake light.

4.) Now you have a permanent brake light setup using all OEM parts.

OP:  Are you close to ABQ?   I just put the BD kit on my 2012WR.  Very Slick.  You can have the brake line banjo I was using before.  The kit is nice because it has those things you need to be legal.   Like hi/lo headlight.

  • 7 years later...

I have a 2014 WR450f and replaced the OEM rear light and I have installed the banjo bolt switch and on the left side where the OEM light connects there is only 2 cables black and blue with a third empty slot connected to any cable to beyond that. Then there is another cable that is on top just under the saet that are 2 tan with one with a green stripe and red that has a but connector not plugged in. When I connect to the old OEM connection the running lights are on which is great but no brake light When I connect the new brake switch to the battaries neg it turns off the light turns off and when I connect it to positive it stays on as a running light. I need to connect it to another cable but mine unlike 2016+ doesn't connect to each other. If I plug into the tan ones the light guts turned on full power with the blue and black are plugged in.
There is no yellow cable to tie the switch to. I have tested with the factory light but it does the same thing.
