2012+ Seat Foam?

Recommended Posts

I have always dealt with the stock Yamaha seat foam on my past bikes ('02 YZ250F, '04 YZ450F, '06WR450F), but the foam on this '12 WR450F just doesn't sit right with me (pardon the pun). After just a single 5 hr day in the saddle my @ss is rubbed raw right where it meets the thighs. I have been reading around on here and searching different manufacturers websites, but a lot of the info seems to be specific to MX or dual sport riding. I strictly ride trail at an aggressive 40 expert pace (I'm not 40, but I don't race and the guy that is closest to my speed that I ride with and races races in the 40 expert class and usually finished top 3).

I am looking for stock height as I am only 5'10". I am not sure if I want a softer seat or just a different shape (wider?) so I thought I would ask you guys.

I have heard great things about both seat concepts and guts racing seats. The thing about these is the seat concepts seats seems to be more dual sport oriented. It's wider which I'm sure adds comfort, but I am afraid that it will bother me when standing and leaning back. Guts racing doesn't list one for the 2012+ WR450F.

So, what are you guys using, what type of riding do you do, how do you like it, and why?

Guts will make whatever you need, just give them a call.

But that's the thing, I don't know what I need. How soft is too soft? How wide it too wide? How tall is too tall? I know these are all personal preference things, but would like to get some opinions to steer me in the right direction.

If you remember the Honda Xr's, that would be soft. The Yz's are more of a medium but because they are so thin they feel like a hard. The Husqvarna I had was definitely a hard foam, it was bad. The wide ones won't bother you standing they just look a little different and are more comfortable when sitting. Its really personal preference. Soft ones tend to wear out quicker and wont allow you to slide around as easily but that can be a pro or a con. Medium to hard are pretty much opposite of that. If your near a dealer, go in and sit on a few different bikes and you will kinda get differences.

I just browse this site, but I have to reply about this. I also hated my 2012 seat. I got the stock height seat concepts seat. It's fantastic! Still narrow towards the front, but wider everywhere else. Get one and never look back, seriously.

What kind of riding do you do? Do you notice the wide part when riding?

At 5/11 with this bike I would not want any taller foam, have got use to the stock firm seat and would not want to change anthing.  Granted after coming from Ktm seats I have changed them all but with the Yamaha  my sugestion would be to leave it alone and put more time on it and go from there.  Can't say I ride Expert anything anymore but still seem to stay out of the  saddle as much as possible.

I ride plenty, put on about 70 hrs since August . Plus, I have had yamahas since 2002. This one is just the wrong shape for my butt or something as the other yamis I didn't have a problem with.

It's your butt and you have to make the call, have owend yz's since 1993 and really can't tell that much difference from then to (2012 Wr450f) seat wise. Lot's of options out there  but still think the stock seat allow's you to move around and turn like the bike want's too.  Comfort wise will not go there we all different.
