New 2010 YZ450F owner here (New to EFI)

Well I hope I'm not beating a dead horse here, but I've got a 2010 YZ450F that i have gotten into coming off a 06 RMZ450. Man this thing is quick, BUT like most i hate the "snap" off idle. Ive seen there are "less hit" maps for the bike and I'm thinking of trying those, but wasn't sure what all i need to start messing with the EFI? Do i need one of the GYTR Power Tuners, or can it be done with something else easier/cheaper? I'm looking for an all around map, as i do about 50/50 woods/trails. I'm no A,B, or even C rider, so i generally roll on the throttles smooth, and sometimes even find myself lugging the bikes (I've heard this can be difficult with EFI) but seems most have found good performance out of some of the woods maps?

The tuner is what you need, you can find them on ebay or borrow one. Theres a lot of maps in this section that you can try. The tuner is the cheapest tool for your issue, i found that messing around with mine helped with starting as well. Good luck.

The gytr tuner is the easiest cheapest way for you. I see them eBay now for around $100-200. You can't hurt the efi with it. You can install or make maps that don't work to well but that's easily reversible.

The most complete cure for the off-idle lurch on the early EFI bikes is to have the throttle body modified by Injectioneering.  Also about $100-150, and reviewed very positively by users.

Thanks guys ill have to look into it!! Any other areas that should be cause for concern on these bikes? I know they seem to get good reviews, and have only seen a few, but they were older posts. Anything to be aware of or look out for?

They had an issue with the head gasket in 2010, I think it was rare but if you end up with oil blown all over your right boot that'll be what it is. It happened to my '11, $30 fix. No other mechanical issues that I've come across with mine.

The only thing I have close to a complaint is the front end doesn't bite as well as previous years. In hardpack or dg corners it knifes or looses traction for a second upon exiting right when power is applied. A m403, lowering link, and suspension helped this. The stock suspension is still great out of the box though. I lowered the radiators and didn't really notice anything. The best help I found was the drd relocation kit. This small issue is nothing compared to other benefits. Just ride it for a while and you'll love the bike!!!

I'm curious about this as a fly wheel weight helped a lot In the tight stuff. The reason I havnt gone out of my way for a tuner is because I don't have any huge issues with the stock map the only complaint I have is the off idle lurch that my 2012 has obviously not on issue when on the track but I do Like too do a little trail riding. I can tolerate it now but maybe this will smooth it out even more.

On my 13', the GYTR 4.4 oz flywheel completely cured that prob for me! Love it!

Yea I agree I did the stealy or stealthy how ever you say it 9 ounce fly wheel weight I admit I don't have a lot of experience with many othe other products too solve the jerky throttle but it was totally worth it I'd do it again in heart beat it was impossible too hold the bike at a steady rpm down low in the rpms its much improved. Of course it's still got a lot of torqe but me feelings are if you are looking for a really tame dirt bike there probably better purpose built trail bikes for you than a 450 mx bike.

Is raising the idle as easy as turning the choke/idle knob counter clockwise? Someone mentioned somewhere it needs to be pulled out or something? What's the correct method?

Just turn it no need too pull it out when adjusting idle.

Ok cool, I searched a bit before asking and someone mentioned having to make adjustments with it pulled out..so just so I clear CCW is raise and CW is lower idle?

I'm not sure i only did it once when I got my bike i slightly raised the idle. If it makes you feel more comfortable I can look in the book but its not a big deal just start the bike turn it one way and if it idles down and you want to turn the idle up turn it the other way you won't mess any thing up.

I have the 4.4 weight, it helped some.

Also, just replacing the stock muffler with an MRD http://www.mrd-racing.com/

removed even more of the off-idle lurch, AND added more over-rev to the power band . . . a win-win.:-)
