Best bars, risers or both for a tall rider

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys I was wondering what the taller riders are riding with setup wise. Also, what is the most you can raise the bars without having to change cables.  I am 6'3 and want the highest hand position possible on a 04 wr.

Thanks,

John

Risers are a poor solution for taller riders because they move the bars back as they move them up.  This pushes the rider farther back, which doesn't set well with the WR, as it likes the rider to be well forward when cornering.  Taller riders have longer arms, and one of the things they find about standing on the bike with typical bars is that the grips are "in their lap", too close to their thighs to allow them to stand fully relaxed and upright comfortably.

The best solution is a pair of bars bent taller, because when taller bends are made, the hand grip part of the bar is moved forward, as well as up.  My son, 6'4" likes the Windham (aka "RM Mid") bend, and so do I, in spite of being shorter than that.  Other bends to look at are the Carmichael High, or the biggest of them, the KX High.  The Windham is very popular among YZ riders.

I was thinking the high bars may be the way to go.  I saw in another thread that a guy was using the Protaper SE DRZ110 bars with 143 mm rise thats 5.6 inches plus risers that moved the bar up 1 and forward 1.5 inches!  I am wondering if that was over kill I don't want to wast the time and money plus I'm not sure the stock cables would stretch that far.

I am 6'5", and I use 1 1/8 Renthal Bars with a 94mm rise. I am also using a set of ROX 2" adjustable risers with the stock top triple and those bars. Allows me the rise of the bars and 2", and it works out very well for me. A slight rotation forward of the ROX risers, and the bars are taller, but no closer to me. I rode all last season this way and it was a huge improvement in stand up riding, as well as seated cornering sitting up on the tank, too.
