clarification on a cam swap.

Will any 5 valve 450 cam work in a 426? I think they are all the same, most write ups say use 2003, but I have an 07 just sitting here and a friend has a bike with the stock cam, so I was going put it in for him.

 

Pretty sure I'm good, but wanted to check,.

You replacing both cams? On the Hotcams site it doesn't seem to crossover from the 426 to the 450.

Just the exhaust for decompression purposes. If 02&03 will interchange, then I believe that 02&07 will as well. Worth a try I guess.

What write-ups did you see that have this information?  Just going off of the Hotcams website, the 2002 426 exhaust cam part# is 4035-IE.  The 2003-2014 450 exhaust cam part# is 4044-IE.

 

You can surely (no I am not caling you Shirley ? ) try it, but if the decomp pin isn't gonna be the right length, your e-start is not going to work.  Even the smallest amount of difference makes all the difference in the world when it comes to the magic button.  I know, I had to send my Hotcam back to them cause they put in the wrong lenght pin in mine when I switched to the YZ timed Hotcam made for the WR.  Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Its been done a zillion times. I just was hoping for some clarification on yearly changes that might impact it.

Its likely hot-cams has different part numbers because the volumetric efficiency of the two motors is going to be different. They are probably different spec all together if made by hot cams, I guarantee its not a one size fits all Hot-cam.

You cannot use both cams from a 450 in the 426 because you would need to use a degree wheel to correctly set the cam timing, since the marks on the 450 cams will not align with any part of the 426 head once the timing is set.  Adding a YZ450 cam of any year requires that the intake cam be properly aligned and then the exhaust cam gets timed relative to that.  The Hot Cams auto decomp exhaust cam for the 426 is made for that engine and times the same as the stock cam. 

 

YZ450 cams come in progressively more aggressive flavors: '30-'05, '06, '07, and '08-'09.  The '03-'05 has the most grunt, the '06 is a nice balance of low end and top end, whereas the '07 or later cams are apt to be too much biased toward top end to be to your liking.
