09 vs 10-13 vs 14 YZ450F differences?

Recommended Posts

my buddy had a 09 with 08 sumo wheels he got 08 axle, axle blocks and made a shim spacer for rear brake brake bracket. problem solved .

The problem with that strategy is that instead of the swing arm slots supporting the axle as designed, when using the undersized '08 or earlier axle with the '08 blocks, the axle is supported by the blocks, which aren't supported by anything other than a very narrow ledge machined into the sides of the axle tab and by the clamping tension of the tightened axle.  Yes, it works, sort of, but it's a long way from being right.

Two better approaches are sleeving a set of axle blocks so that the sleeve extends into the swing arm slot, then using '08 spacers, or machining a step onto the back side of a pair of '08 blocks to engage the swing arm slot.

OK, I'm confused, why would someone make a spacer and not make it long enough to fit from the inside of the blocks to the wheel seal spacer?   Keep in mind there is also the brake bore to go through too.

Was not too hard to make. Works great.

2006 wheel, axle, seal spacers, along with the 09 axle blocks.

I do remeber what your talking about as my buddy mentioned that when he made up the spacers and other stuff, from what i recall he said that the standard 09 on 09 axle to swingarm actually doesnt make full contact as it is. I could be wrong though!

So having to wait till May is pretty sucky. My mind was made up. Of course I can't stop looking at YZ450's for sale. Seeing a bunch of good deals on 10-13's. FI is pretty tempting....

I have a question about the 10-13's. Is it possible to get the front end to feel planted like the 06-09? I've been noticing a lot of talk about different links etc.....What is the general consensus?

That is what I'm afraid of. Throwing $1500 at 10-13 or 14 and still not have it handle. Too me, the front being loose on entry is a major issue. Makes me not confident and tentative.

It is slightly insane though to prefer a 5 year old bike over a newer "more advanced" FI model.......

There is no other OEM that is like that. Any other Brand's current bike is hands down better than their 09 models.

Ha, I was looking at the RMZ this am. I've owned every brand except Suzuki. I'm still a little pissed at the way they dumped Randy Hawkins in the late 90's. LOL! On paper for Enduro, you would think the Suzuki would be a wise choice. Clutch is bad, but a new Rekluse would solve that I guess. I'm partial to Yamaha bc they usually have great motors and great suspension, plus I've had great luck with them. I'm open to try another brand though. I kicked around trying a KTM 450XC, but I don't trust it will be reliable and it is a lot more money. I can get a 30 hour 09 YZ for $3k.

My big issue is that I prefer the KYB SSS fork. None of the other brands have it.

I'll take a KXF motor in a RMZ frame with Yamaha KYB suspension and KTM Brembo brakes.....

I need to just stop looking until I'm ready to buy. I'm driving myself insane thinking of all the possibilities.

09 YZ450 with the 17mm Zip Ty triple clamps should turn well enough for Enduros. Revalve the suspension, 18" wheel, Rekluse, my Scott's damper, hand guards, skid plate, and new seat. That is where I need to go.

Well I found what I was looking for. I pulled the trigger on a 09YZ450. Has about 20-30hrs on it and I got it for $3200. It is stock except for the PMB kick stand, graphics, and bars. Can't wait to go pick it up. I will start another thread about setting it up for Enduro and Harescrambles.

Hey Rocker,

Ha! That is a cool WR. Coincidence, but my YZ happens to be in your neck of the desert, Tijeras, NM. Will be picking it up on the 24th while we are on Easter Vacation. We are doing Big Bend TX, White Sands/Trinity site, Cloudcroft, now up to Tijeras, back down to Roswell, and Carlsbad Caverns, then the Carlsbad 100 NMDRC race.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents on the carb issues.  Just today I was at the track doing jetting testing for the Dr.D exhaust I just got off Craigslist (awesome power delivery for the '09 YZ450 by the way!).  What I ended up doing is on the engine side of the intake tract the rubber boot has a notch made into it where the carb has a matching notch for alignment.  I took a razor blade and removed (cut out) the top rubber notch to let my carb be able to rotate further so I can easier access the bottom of the float bowl for jetting changes.  Agreed the main is a lot easier to get to, but with it rotated further even the pilot is accessible with a little effort.  I do still have to remove the tank and engine mounts, and of course loosen the carb clamps, but otherwise it's not too bad.  I can change mains in about 10 minutes start to finish.  If you wanted even more rotation you could unplug the hot start connection and the thing would probably go horizontal at that point.  Hope that helps.

FWIW, it's not too difficult to get to the main and pilot jets with the carb on the bike. Drain the bowl, loosen the carb boots, and from the shifter side, you can twist the carb just enough to remove the bowl and get a shorty flathead in there to change the jets. Small dental-type mirror, flashlight, and some zen power to know where the holes are without being able to see them helps quite a bit. But it still beats disassembling the back of the bike by a long shot. I can change main and pilot jets in 20 minutes.

This is on the WR - I think it would be about the same on the YZ.

I custom made a screw driver to fit in the hole when the plug is removed from bottom of fuel bowl. It's a blind stab at it but can be done. Easier than removing carb. Basically cut down a screw driver so it will fit in the tight space.

But to be honest once I installed a 48 pilot there has been no need to change

Also, just to clarify, the best option for the main jet is a very small 1/4" socket with a short extension and a socket knuckle with the 8mm socket; shorty screw driver would be for the other jets in there (go easy tightening jets).  Less than 20 minutes start to finish with removing the tank and all for me, and I'm not super fast when working on stuff most of the time.

Isn't the Main Jet a 6mm??
