02 WR 426 seat height changing? GUTS?

Recommended Posts

I had the pleasure of mounting up a friends YZ seat and tank on my bike for a grueling (24 hour) race in November. Man, it was killer. Imagine taking off an old worn out, poor quality front tire and replacing it with the hottest razor sharp tire on the rack. The difference the seat/tank makes in cornering grip/feel is even bigger than that. The clarke seat and tank runs about 180, and is way worth it in my opinion. Better yet, find a used YZ seat and tank on ebay for maybe $100 and bolt er up!

I am sure the tall seat from GUTS would help a little in the ergo's department, as well as bieng more comfy, but you still have that big fat tank pushing you back on the bike. Even when standing, you can't grip the bike with your knees without sliding towards the rear. The slimmed down tank makes a huge difference.

OK, just my two cents! ?

yeah, I am sure you are right. I did not realize how shitty it was until I rode my buddies ktm525 and the transition was flawless, then I knew I had to do something with this wr.

Thanks

I spoke with the guys from Guts today and was told that in the ergo dept. the tall seat almost flattens out the dip completely. So I ordered one for the WR. I did not like the way the Clarke and IMS tanks hang down over the engine. They all have their positives and negatives, but I felt the oversized tank was just too much. I have heard it makes reaching for the choke and hot start an absolute nightmare. And having a gas tank sitting less than an inch from my exhaust also did not sound good. Pictures of the older YZ combinations also have a very big dip. Having not rode a YZ for more than a couple of minutes a while back, I am not really sure of any other benefits rather than the tank and seat being almost flat.

I know what you mean about hanging over. It still looks as if the yz seat is still pushed farther up, the only thing I don't like is that it hold 1/2 gallon of fuel less and I usually ride out in the back country

A remote hot start is a must with the ZipTy/IMS tank, and you just have to reach under and pull the choke prior to mounting the bike...no biggie. ?

Speaking of the hot start, did you have a problem routing the cable with that tank? I have had the hot start on my bike for less than a month and I just had to replace the cable. It got kinked under the WR tank by the ignition.

Nope, no kinking. I would review how you have it routed vs. were it was kinked. And did you mean to say stator, not ignition??? I was able to route mine along the left side and into the cable guide under the stator.

I have the Clarke 3.3 gallon and the tank is way more than 1" away from the header. You do have to reach under the tank a little to access the choke but how many times a day are you using the choke? Usually once for me so this is not even an issue. I can reach the hot start no problem while sitting on the bike.

The gas cap is farther forward than the stock tank. There is no way you are going to get the same result by putting a taller, flatter seat on the bike with the stock tank. You will still be farther back on the bike. I wouldn't even waste the money.

The best advice is to find someone that lives near you and ride their bike with the YZ seat and tank if you aren't sure. I took one ride on Stefe9999's bike and that was it. The difference is so dramatic that for me, it felt like a totally different bike.
