Electric Starter Problem with 2005 WR450

When the bike is cold (I don't mean cold cold, just sitting in garage in SoCal), the electric starter won't turn the motor fast enough to start it.  I hold the starter button down and it sounds like it turns half a turn then stops, then turns a half turn then stops.  I have a fully charged battery.  I have tried with a fully charged yausu (sp) and a fully charged after market.  I have checked electrical connections at both battery connections, where the system is grounded to frame and the connection on the starter.  Neither pos or neg wires from battery get hot.  Once I have the bike started (kicking or kicking with starter button depressed) and it is warmed up, I can shut it down and the electric starter will spin the motor fast enough to start (like it is supposed to do all the time).  What should I check next?  Is there a way to check resistance through the stater motor to verify it is OK?  Help!

That sounds like a problem with the auto decompression pin staying retracted.  I had that same problem with my '09.  The starter would spin it a little then stop, I would kick it when it stopped and I couldn't get past the compression.  

I took the cams out to adjust the valves and cleaned and worked the decomp pin by hand.  Changed the oil although it looked clean and now it works.  

I've heard that the auto decompression spring weakens and can cause this.  I don't see the spring listed anywhere.  Looks like you would have to get a whole new exhaust cam to replace the spring.

There seems to be a consensus that the problem is the auto decompression pin on the exhaust cam.  Seems like this is a problem on other models also.  And I would have to buy a new cam ($150-$175) because they don't sell the spring separately. 

Has anyone taken the cam apart and reworked one?  Successfully?  Anybody know where I can find a diagram of the cam?  Is it obvious how it works and why the pin sticks once you take it out of the bike and look at it?

I got sick of mine sticking and bought a set of Hotcams on ebay for $260 shipped.  You can get the exhaust only for $142 shipped.  

It's obvious how it works but not how to get it apart.

The Decomp has gotten stuck on and off on all of my WR's. 

Popping the clutch  in first gear and rolling backwards in first usually frees it up.

Thanks for the info.

I think I will just buy and install the Hot Cams also.  I went form YZFs to the WR to get the electric starter so I plan to get it working correctly.  Have you ever heard of anyone having the same "stuck pin" problem with the Hot Cam version of these cams?

I got the intake and exhaust HotCams from Amazon. 

They are in and the bike starts now.  That is to say the starter spins the motor so it starts with the choke on.

When it gets a little warm and I turn off the choke it backfires and dies in about 10 seconds.  Did you have to change anything else (jets, carb settings, etc) to compensate for the difference the new cams make?

On my WR250 I had to go to a bigger pilot jet and raise the needle a notch.  On my 450 I haven't had it long or ridden it much but it's backfiring.  Probably will need to do the same, when the weather improves and I can ride.  

I've never heard of anybody having the stuck pin problem with hotcams.
