Hi, i have a chance to buy a 1989 yz250. I am not sure how good these bikes are, is it worth it since its 24 years old i went and looked at the bike and he was asking $350 then, to much so i left, now hes coming back and he says he'll sell it to me for $250

heres the listing of the bike http://atlanta.craig...4201648207.html

(i know on the it says new top and bottom end, i dont know why he put that there but it dosent have a top end and im doubting it has a bottom end)

cons: the electrical is completely fried, has 0 compression( and i mean 0 i put my finger over the spark plug hole and kicked it with my hand, didnt blow my finger off in the slightest)  and front and back master cylinders need rebuild.

pros: he is asking $250, engine looks AMAZING no rust or anything, exhaust has no rust only has 1 dent in it, bike isnt greasy from oil, frame isnt rusty at all (just really dusty) spokes arent rusted and the brake rotors arent either.

questions:

1. is this bike worth the money?? basically what i am saying is even tho its cheap, should i still buy it or should i stay away from it?

2. it needs a new stator, and cdi.. problem: there isnt any stators on ebay, when i looked up a 1990 yz250 they had stators left and right. are these parts interchangable?? can i put a 1990 yz250 complete electrical system on a 1989 yz250??

3. when i looked up new top ends on wiseco, they mentioned that if you have it bored out you have to mod the power valves...how am i going to do this??? can a machine shop do it??? anyone know a reliable machine shop that will mod the power valves and bore the cylinder that i can send it to??

anything else i should know about this bike??

Thanks!!

Even at $250 you will put $1,000 into to make it reliable and running with acceptable jetting/suspension. Believe it or not there's some nice already setup running bikes on CL for $1,250. Prolly mid to late 90s or even a 2000 or 2001. Newer models had better motors, suspension, handling, etc. It's a hard reality to face I know. :busted:

i see what you are saying and i thought of that but if i found lets say a 1998 rm250 for $1200 i would have to do the same thing im doing to the 89 yz250 which is top end (mainly) i would have to do that to the rm250 within 20-25 hours of riding, maybe less.

so thats why i would want the yz250, plus i like to work on bikes.

That's cool but New Old Stock parts for 1989 are either expensive or unavailable. Also available are late 90s smokers with either rebuilt or low hours on the motor for same price so you wouldn't necessarily hafta rebuild bike soon but when you do the parts are everywhere and cheap.

Something like this:

So there are no stators or anything electrical that is interchangable with a 1989 yz250?
