It's an awsome bike no question about it. If your willing to take the time to set it up for you. I have loved it from the first day I got it but I have made it better and better over time. I purchased a new 13' kx 450 a few weeks ago so I could compare the two. The kx is a great bike and has many positives for a guy that wants to jump on and ride without much set up.

I do believe a lot of that impression comes from the dealer you choose. I got the KX from a dealer that supports a lot of racers locally so I bet that translates to better initial set up. The yz came from a dealer that doesn't seem to know much about MX bikes. The mechanic that did the walk through with me on the yz spent 2 minutes looking for the battery ????

I think the YZ has better suspension and a better motor for sure once you have it set up to deliver the power to the ground. For me the 2014 yz450 is a much better fit. The kx feels smallish. But it's so comfortable I have not moved the bars or lowered the pegs, nothing. Adjust air fork and a couple clicks on adjusters.

You can read many posts on TT about setting up the new yz. Here is what I have done to make the bike work for me. SAG at 110, forks raised 7mm, for oil replaced and set to factory spec of 335 cc. It came with one leg at 300 and one at 260. Compression on the forks a little softer, revound a little faster, This made a nice improvement in front end traction.

I wonder how many of the things I had to do are really just a case of who put the bike together at the dealer ??? Most if I had to guess.

i have had 2 rides on the bike since i got the 2014. I went from a 2012 which I thought I loved till i got on the 2014. They are VERY different! There are things I can do on the 2014 that I simple could not achieve on the older version. This bike can be lugged around or let loose! I have WAYY more confidence on the newer bike. To be honest physically it feels like I am riding my old 2002 YZ250F! The way it feels between my legs is similar. It compliments my riding style. This bike luves to be turned with the rear wheel spinng and the gas on which is how i like to turn. The suspension is a headache at first. Even tho I have it setup for me close to what I like, it still beats the crap outta me on the small studder bumps. Other than that, I absolutely LUV this bike!

  • 2 months later...

I have 26 hours on mine now. It took me 15 of those tweaking it to get it dialed just right. Now I feel like I can't be beat. I don't think I've ever been faster or more comfortable. Jumping everything and killing the turns. Too bad there are faster riders out there to burst my bubble. :-(. But it sure isn't the bikes fault.
