So what benefit or gains would the 08/09 cdi give on older models such as 06's? More top end? Or same timing curve as the older cdi's from midrange-on?

I found a good deal on an 03 CDI box. It's really cheap, so I thought it may be worth getting to try out. I have an 09 w/ a 9oz fww & rekluse, so I was wondering if you think having the 09 & other mods, would it help mellow out the 03 CDI to were it might work good. Smooth, but still some good low grunt... There's no 06s out there for a good price right now & I've got other things at the moment on the bike I could spend $100 on. This one is $35, so I'd grab it if you think it would be a good fit for the woods here in GA...

Im interested in this thread because I want to know if I buy say an 09 and put my 03 cdi and 03 cams and an 12.5 or 13:1 piston in and see how close to an 03 in a 09 chassis I can get.

That's good to know. I was reading up on the 03s last night (mag reviews) & they were saying the racers or aggressive riders liked the hit & power, just not the weekend guy. I guess it is worth a try. I was thinking with the 09 cams & FWW, it may give it a good snappy balance...

As someone who has owned and raced both the '03 and '06 engines, the '03 power was harder to ride, made you tired faster, and overall was a slower bike than the '06.  There's no advantage to it at all, IMO, but feel free to try it if you want.  I've run both bikes against each other and ridden them back to back.  Fact is the '06 makes 2 more HP, and while the '03 "feels" massively more powerful at lower RPM, it ain't.  Side by side on asphalt, the bikes run dead even until about third gear, where the '06 starts to walk away.  In the dirt, the '03 is just too explosive, and the biggest problem is getting it to hook up.  The '06 just takes off and leaves.

Gray's right,I had a 04,buddy had a 03, I rode a 06 better power top to bottom ,the 03-04 don't have more power ,their maps are not as dialed as the 06 so it feels like it does.09 with ported head &13.5 piston really good combo add the 06 box better.I had a vortex box on my 04 to smooth out the bottom.If you want a big hit on the bottom you need to bump the compression and change the cam. You'll  hate it ,I did.

Thanks for the input. That's one reason I don't like riding the 06 crf450 I have in my garage (buddy wanted me to take it so it'll get ridden) because the hit is pretty hard. Granted it's got flexx bars, stabilizer & really plush offroad suspension, in the tighter stuff it's such a pain. The hit is rough & hard. It wears slap me out, fast! It's not to fun to ride & I don't want my bike to feel like that. This yz450 is the easiest, smoothest 450 I've ridden hands down. I don't get tired & it makes riding really fun in the woods. I'll just keep an eye out for an 06 CDI. If you guys see a good deal, let me know, I'll snatch it up.

Well looks like i'm the ugly duckling here ?   and all are entitled to their own opinions, Gray as always you are correct on everything as far as hp and where the 06 excels over the previous generation in a drag. I to have owned both but at different times. I have no problem with hooking up on my 03, In fact I usually have the opposite problem but perhaps it's my gearing and the recluse.
