How do I know what year the bike is. It was given to me by my uncle and I have just been working on getting it running. Replaced the spark plug, air filter, cleaned out the carb, etc. But I haven't got a title and I have no idea what year it is. Is there anything specific about any of the three years they made them that would help me figure out what year this bike is? Thanks!

are you even sure its a 426 and not a 400,they look the same.I know that the 2001 had a different set of bolts on the suspension linkage than the 2002.If I remember right the 2001 had nuts while the 2002 had threaded plates but I'm not 100% sure on this now. There was a website that outlined the differences between the years,do a search you may find it.Also they went to an aluminum subframe in 2001 but that is easily replaced.

The 10th character of the VIN number on the frame head tells you the year the frame was built.  "Y" is a 2000, 1 is 2001, 2 is 2002, etc.

The problem often is with older bikes that 426's are sold with some old YZ/WR400 engine in place of the newer, bigger, better 426.

This bike has a painted blue subframe, rather than the unpainted aluminum. So would that make it an 00 or 01? And it was sold as a 426 so I'm pretty sure that's what it is. But I'll look into it.

How can you differentiate between a 426 and a 400? Any significant differences?

shouldn't there be a cylinder size stamped on the outside of the cylinder somewhere, like 426CC.

Hmm. I'll have to check on that.

From what I've read the painted frame narrows it down to either a 2000 or 2001. Considering its a 426. Thanks for the help!

Look at the top of the frame neer the sterring head, were the forks attach to the frame, arround the head there should be a 17 digit code, this is the VIN number, look at the tenth digit and find out what it is,  if it is a "Y" that would be a 2000 model, a "1" is a 2001 model, and a "2" is a 2002 model, but we already know that its not a 2002 because it has the painted subframe. And to check if its a 426 engine, look arround the cylinder "jug" and there should be the displament stamped in it, something like  "426cm³"

The sub frame can be interchanged or painted, so it's not a sure thing at all.  The VIN number info was posted six posts ago.

Thank you!! Is it true that the 2001 had a black seat and the 2000 had a blue?

I'm quite sure it is the original painted frame.

Have you read the VIN code yet?  Why guess when the info is right there?

I haven't been home to look at the bike. I plan on checking it as soon as possible.

Yes, the 2000 models had a all blue seat, and the 2001-'02 models had a blue and black seat. But that isnt a for sure way to tell, being that seats get ripped and people change the covers or by ones off parted out bikes or alot of people switched to aftermarket seats. and dont worry about the subframe being swapped out, it is highly unlikly that the bike would have the subframe swapped out on it. Unless it was badly wrecked at some point.

Its an 01. The 10 digit is a 1 and it has the black seat.
