Need Help with New Springs - '13 WR450

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I've been trying to figure out what spring rates to get. I'm about 275 in full gear, so I'm pretty sure the stock spring rates are a bit soft for me. I've looked on Race Tech's website and it looks like they don't have rates listed for the '12 or '13 models. Have any of you guys swapped out springs for heavier rates, and if so where did you order them from?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Krannie is mostly correct....however the 12/13 shock spring is also different from the 2007-2011 in that it is several mm shorter. Having said that you can get the older model shock springs mounted on the new shock if you have a spring compressor. If memory serves the difference is about 15mm. Doesn't sound like much but it is enough to require the compressor.

Definitely need the 0.54s up front but I would steer you towards the 6.7kg/mm for the rear. The 6.3 will be too soft to get proper sag numbers for your weight unless you like to run a lot of sag.

JDL is right. The YZ shock has a shorter spring-thing. But the older spring will work fine, if it matters.

I dissagree on the 6.7..... 6.4 max.

I am 296 lbs fully loaded with my 26lb pack, use .56/6.4 and get 28/105 (desert) or 25/100 (single track) sag sitting in the sweet spot in attack position.

When I stand up, since I am tall and lean over the front more, I have stiffer front springs than .54.

...but JDL is faster than me, so,.......... ?

I am not sure why rates aren't listed online yet. We've done a handful of WR450's including some tests with Dirt Bike Magazine. I will check with our techs for a recommendation.

Did you also know you can get a discount when ordering from Race Tech just for being a TTalk member?

Just wanted to say a big thanks to the Race Tech guys - I see they've updated the web site to include the information for the '12 (and therefore '13) model WR's. You guys are awesome.

Thanks again everyone!
