So I am building a BEAST. I took my low mileage BMW R1100RT and tore it down to the motor, trans and final drive and started building it up into a dual sport bike. Not an easy task. I hated the A-arm and coil shock fork set up...ditched it, cut the front upper frame and welded in a honda CR aluminum frame neck so that I could use an MX fork set up. Picked up a 2003 YZ front end, forks to wheel, brakes and bars in great condition on the cheap. I custom built some bracing and trussing for the frame, built a custom rear subframe to hold a dirtbike style seat and rear fender. It is coming along pretty well, but every once in a while I hit a wall and I need to ask for help.

I am using as many of the BMW components as possible on the running and as many standard dirtbike parts where possible so I can make any needed repairs while out on an adventure in the NEAR future. Handlebar controls are a tough spot though. I HATE the stock BMW bar controls and switches. That made me want to change them out to a more dual sport style set up. That brings me to the clutch.

The BMW uses a diaphram clutch with a single center disc, similar to most manual cars instead of a basket and multiple discs. The clutch throw on a BMW is longer than most other bikes. The pull is not hard at all, just a bit longer. They do this by a larger distance between the pivot bolt of the lever and the cable end.

I tried using a universal Moose racing perch and lever but could not get enough throw. The cable end on the BMW is also 10mm where most other bikes are 8mm ends.

Does anyone know of bikes, older or newer, that use a longer throw and longer distance between the pivot and the cable end?
The BMW has a distance of about 1-3/8" from the center of the pivot bolt to the center of the hole for the cable end. Most bikes use a distance of about 1-1/16" which is less throw with the same lever movement.

Help.

I do have some pics if anyone is interested in seeing the beast, it is not beautiful, but should be a cool and different adventure bike when done.
