WR450F Max hours on engine?

Recommended Posts

I have 5500 miles on mine (2008) which is 90% dirt and I average 20mph on the dirt so that makes 275hrs

I haven't been into the engine yet

Oil changes every 10 -15hrs, with filters every other, and valve checks every year

I don't bang it off the rev limiter

The bikes history is more important

What oil has been used?

Hows it been ridden?

Hows it been maintained?

a bike with 20hrs on it that's been run low on oil is gonna be trouble!

WR engines have a reputation for being super reliable with 10000+ miles easily achievable before engine work is needed, but if they've been mis-treated.......

LIke others have said all depends on how it's been looked after and how its been ridden.

If you can get an honest answer from the person you're buying off in terms of how its been treated and maintained, then you're pretty safe with some of the fugures being quoted above.

I've got more than 160hrs and 8500kms on my '08 and still doesn't use a skerrick of oil or blow smoke. Starts perfectly.

Having said that, I'm only a clubman enduro racer. If you look at how hard some of the Pro class guys ride, you'd have to expect it would take a much higher toll on the bike. Many variables to consider.

I know this is an old post, but I'm trying to figure out how many hours to go on a wr450f and everyone is telling me 200 hours is the max I should go for trail riding. One guy said he went 300 and it was a little bit too long, and the piston was touching the bore. How are you guys getting 650...!? I mean these are still high revving racing motors...

There's no way you can go that long without even a piston change..I'm having people tell me 300 hrs is too far...

Give me a year and I will have the 300 hours and I won't do a thing to the top-end.  I will have to ride a bit more, but I will be willing to put in the extra effort for the cause ?

I just wanted to add my own story here. I have a 2008 wr450f with approx. 25000 miles on it. It has been desert raced, been to Baja  many times, is trail ridden about 2 or 3 times a week on very rough and nasty Northern Nevada trails. I'm far from slow as I'm a former local mx pro and a expert rated desert racer . 6000 miles ago it got its first new piston and it just got new valves. Its still on the original crankshaft, but I did have to replace the trans. output shaft because it stripped out. I have always used Rotella T oil and change it often. These bikes are bulletproof if you just take decent care of them. The bike is  uncorked, jetted, piped and modded suspension.

Are all you guys others bikes modded or stock? It just seems to me if the WR is putting out close to 50hp compared to the stock 37 or what ever it is, it's going to be about as reliable as the yz450f as the motors are almost the same, and the yzf usually lasts about 100-150 hours trail ridden..
