dot 5 instead of dot 4- time to rebuild?

06 yz450. Used dot 5 to bleed brakes, because I had it on hand, and have since read thats no good. Brakes have also started to feel pretty mushy and weak.

How far should I go with rebuilding these things? Not trying to break the bank...

You might be able to clean everything up in soap and water and start over. If the rubber looks OK, put it together clean and try it. This would mean taking the whole thing apart, caliper, master cylinder, everything off the bike, torn down and cleaned. Dry it with a spray brake cleaner and rinse it in clean brake fluid. Replace any suspect parts, of course.

Otherwise, DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are all glycol based fluids, and can be interchanged upward. That is, if your system requires DOT 4, you can use either DOT 4 or DOT 5.1. You could not use DOT 4 to replace fluid in a system that requires DOT 5.1 within the guidelines, though.
