Let me get this straight...

If a good top end off a thirteen year old bike sells for 900: http://www.ebay.com/...d3bc286&vxp=mtr

A damaged head sells for 250: http://www.ebay.com/...52876d2&vxp=mtr

And I've seen clean titled SM frame going for a thousand bucks

...Why shouldnt I just part out my bike?

Kidding, however I recently purchased a frame and complete motor that came off a 2000 S model for 200 bucks. The guy said it need a top end, which I knew meant it was trashed. It had a MCCT that had all but 1/4 inch of thread left and had a broken exhaust cam bracket, cam journals chewed up, and valve seats damaged. One of the exhaust valves dropped, bounced off the piston and head then either decided to exit the motor or the person that determined all it needed was a "top end" removed the broken off valve. The piston was trashed, but the cylinder was spotless, and the rod was not bent. Also there was no vertical play in the rod. A pair of cases right now on Fleabay is 250, I was thinking 350 for a complete bottom end was not over asking. I do not want to turn this into a for sale thread, I'm just trying to be realistic about what this is worth.

One of my ideas was to get this motor, buy the ACT gears, a stroker crank, BB kit, TI valves, RHC's, and springs and build a monster motor to swap with my current Z.

when i kill mine, i'm parting it. someone, somewhere, is willing to pay $40 for an axle, or $300 for one wheel. it will make buying a new-to-me barely used bike for $1500 or less much less painful.

? Good plan...

It is a bit crazy what some parts are being offered for on ebay. Where they sell is often at a different level, there are some deals out there if you take your time. I purchased a nice complete lower end to begin a second motor with ACT box, stroker crank, BB, etc, just like you mentioned. I have bought a few other items and just set them aside with the lower end until I have everything. (I'm still looking for a decent cylinder head...???) Hopefully the second motor is done and ready to go before my current motor expires... I would like to keep my current motor as a back-up. If I wanted to get any money out of my bike I would also have to part it out... (What is a 70K+ mile 2006 DRZSM worth?)

I have considered buying another brand of bike... but with a fresh stroker motor and the ACT box, I think the DRZ would serve me very well. ?

Mileage is just a number. The frame that came with the motor has no title. But I'm going to apply for a lost/abandoned vehicle title and once I get that power coat it and use it as my SM's frame. Then take my clean titled frame and just sell it. I told myself I'll never get rid of the bike, I have too much invested. So I have no problems rolling around on a 2000 "S" model in 100% SM trim..
