96 cr250 pwk 38 airstriker jetting info

Recommended Posts

So I am currenlty trying to find a pwk 38 airstriker from a 2000 cr250 to swape the pj28 in my 96 cr250. I am wondering if the baseline jetting that the factory installed in the 2000 carb is going to work with my 96. Can I use the jets and needle from the pj28 to start or are the carbs/motors alot different to the point they need new jetting? Is the motor of the 96 the same as the 2000 meaning the 2000 jetting should work just fine?

I am at sea level to +300 ft, 50-60 degrees atm

pj28 has a 55pilot and 178main, no idea as to what needle as the po set the carb up. I am trail riding with this and currently running 32/1 maxima k2, should I switch to 40/1 for the bush?

Plug is a BR8IEX

Any insight is greatly appreciated

ps, sorry cause I know I'm sort of beating the dead horse here but I could not find much info on the early 90s era pwk upgrade here or anywhere for that matter, only 01 and up

The 00 carb will work perfect for your 96. You may need to go leaner on the pilot but everything else will be very close.

Yeah, I was thinking of grabbing a 50, I think it comes with a 48 stk? Are the jets at least interchangable? Thx

Pilot, main jets, needle are interchangable. The slide is different. 55 is rich on the pilot, but jetting can vary a little from bike to bike. Usually, when the pilot is super rich, the o ring is missing on the air screw and someone compensated. You won't hurt it by trying the leaner pilot, and 48-50 is what most people are running on a 250.

Ok thank Zaz, looks like I will need to buy a 50 then, will the 178 main do or should I grab a 175 to try. What was the stock main for 2000? Will the air box and intake boots fit properly using the 91mm long pwk carb, same dimension as the pj28?

Also I posted a "wanted add" but if anyone has the 2000 cr250 carb they want to get rid of at a reasonable price I'm pp ready:)

All Keihin jets are interchangeable. I have a whole bunch of jets that I interchange between my CRF450, and my 125. I even interchanged the pilot on my atc70 and the pilots on the CR80 I sold also interchange. I don't think the Needles are interchangeable though but the 00 needle should work really well on the 96. If you are getting a PWK with all stock jets in it, I would run them and see how the bike responds, if it needs some fine tuning go from there.

Well I guess I need to wait till I find a good airstiker for sale and see what the jets are in it before assuming they are stock. I thought I could buy some time and get the jet pre ordered but it is nice to hear what should work from user experience anyways.

Can the stock throttle cable be used with the new carb or do I need the 2000 throttle cable? I know there is a little screw in holder deal I assume that usually comes with the carb?

Stock cable works great. I am using the 94 CR125 cable on mine and it fits perfect. My carb came with the 00 cable and I liked the 94 cable better.

The cr 250 has not changed much with regard to jetting requirements. My 1985 has 45/172. My cr 480 is close to that, ask someone local riding a cr 250, and you will be close. If you have the money, I suggest a new carb. Used Keihin can sometimes be a problem as the float needle seat is not replaceable.

funny you say that zaz, I'm just researching now where to buy one. Service Honda want a crazy 100 just for shipping to Canada. Best price I can an find is from partzilla for 220 shipped. Wish I could find one a bit cheaper, local Honda stealer wants 303:o

Partzilla is probably about as good as it is going to get as far as pricing. You might look into JDjetting.com and see what he will ship one to you for. He will be a bit more expensive but he jets them for you before shipping and sends you some extra mains and 2 needles with the carb. I am using a JD jet kit in mine and I love it.

so I think I am going to bite the bullet and order the new 2000 carb from partzilla. I was thinking of just adding a 45 pilot and 175 main in as well. Should I be looking at getting the 99 cr250 needle or does the needle that comes stock for 2000 work well? Seems there are some arguments that the 99 carb came with a better needle but uses a richer 5.5 slide where the 2000 has some issues with the needle but uses a better suited 7.0 slide. I just want to make sure I have my ass covered when it gets here, scared to screw it up not knowing a ton about jetting. I know a lean surge when I hear one though so I think I'll be safe from blowing it up.

Just order the 00 carb and install and run it. If it loads up during idle after it is warm, then go to a 45 pilot. I would bet that you are going to be able to run it pretty much stock. Same with the main, if it doesn't burn clean at WOT then get a leaner main.

Just placed the order for the 2000 carb, 45 pilot and a 175 main for 221 shipped. I already have a 178 main if I only need to drop 1 size just so i have some breathing room. I read the needle is a little rich and might be better in clip 2 to start. Thanks for your help with this.

Looked at the jd carb but it was going to cost me around 300 so I had to pass, I assume that the pwk never really needed alot of help in 2000 anyways?

Try Sudco, I get all my carb stuff from them. The downside there is you need to know exactly what you need. JD is more expensive but you get the special needles and custom jetting as stated above. Good luck!

BTW- Next carb I buy is going to be a Lectron, I think

Thanks Zaz, I'm going to stick with the partzilla oem carb since the order is placed now and I think I have the jets to cover my conditions, just the needle I'm not so sure of yet.

Tell me more of this lectron you speak of??

Help please lol.......

So I have to pwk installed and have been trying to get it jetted to the last 2 days. Started with stock jetting and it was too rich, I'd get a bad gung randomly coming off a Rev meaning there is too much fuel to burn I guess. I figured out the pilot was too rich because when I backed the air screw almost all the way out that gung went away. Ok so next jetting round I try a 45 pilot with 2.75 turns out on the air screw and i loose the gung, also changed the 180 main out for a 178. Went for a rip and i was blubbery at wot. Back into the shop and changed the 45 for a 42 aircrew is now at 1 turn out and main down to a 175, dropped the needle one clip to second and let her rip. Seems pretty good but I think with leaning the needle the 45 will be right in the money so that's the next step. Does this jetting sound safe for sea level to 900ft, 60–75 degrees. 32:1 maxima k2 with 95 octane pump gas. New boyssen pro reeds and fresh silencer packing too

Also here is where I need the advise, I have been trying to get a consistent idle out of it and I can but there is something strange going on..... I think. When I get the bike all warmed up from a ride and Rev it hard it will come down fine to where I set the idle at, not hanging or surging, no gung sound. When I have it idling and just stab the throttle a little it will come off the low Rev and either die or it will come down to a really low idle then climb fairly quick back to my set idle or close to it. Fresh motor, great compression, starts first kick no problem. Checked for air leaks with starting fluid all around the carb, carb boot, intake, exhaust, power valve cover, inside the flywheel cover, case gaskets...... All over the whole motor lol and not one change in idle. I also made sure to grease the power valve shaft and linkage area in the cylinder when I put the motor back together so I am 99% sure I don't have an air leak. Parts for a leak down tester are hard to find locally and none of the shops have them since we live in a 4t dominated world now. So I ask is this normal? This is a new 00 carb that appeared to be set up at the factory so I assumed the float level was good but to be honest I noticed this with the pj carb too and though it was just going for a shit.
