Hello fellow TTfans,

I have recently acquired a 1999 WR400F (Australian registrable model). It is no ''looker'' by any means at this stage, but has a re-built engine (by Yamaha). I bought it from a mate and had previously done some work to it. The carb was the most annoying piece of sh#t that I ever came across on a dirt bike. Anyway, it is now replaced for the YZ carb (same as the YZ426/WR426), problem solved  I will upload pic at a later date but I don't think most will like it. :goofy: I am in the process of fixing it up & making it look pretty so maybe it will turn out a nice bike (one day).

I have been doing some research on here & have found heaps of info & would like to thank everyone for their assistance. It's really good that the public are able to have free access to this info & hope to share some myself.

To the point- I have a few questions concerning what parts from other models fit my 1999 WR400. The main ones in questions are-

(1.) What wheels/rims are interchangeable- I think it is YZ from 125- 426 & WR250- WR426. The YZ450's have 19 rear so would not be the same.

(2.) Is there a way to upgrade to an electric start, i.e.- change the casing for the WR426?

(3.) What front forks will fit- I bought YZ426 from eBay so I'm just hoping that the upper tubes fit into the triple tree? (I'll know soon enough)

That will do for now, hope that's not too many. Any info regarding the 1999 WR400 will be welcomed.

Thanks all in advance (and your contribution to this site).

Everyone is looking but no replies yet- maybe I just ask hard questions  If you can only answer one of my questions it will be gratefully received.

Man I hope that suspension fits or it will be back to riding the ''flying trampolene'' with that song from Aladdin- Magic carpet ride (a whole new world) playing in the background :foul:

Here are a few pic's of the old girl..

I am now thinking that my question can not be answered. I have searched this forum and the YZ forum with search words- YZ suspension (this forum) comes up with a lot of others year models and a page of other unrelated topics. Searching YZ forks, WR400 suspension, YZ v's WR suspension comes up with the same but more about people telling people to upgrade to YZ suspension.... Well I have done that- I bought YZ400 rear suspension and WR426 forks but have no idea whether it will fit my 1999 WR400F? I guess I will have to wait and see.

I am glad the recluse question is answered but what if the 426 kit fits? Hmm.. rather not chance it.

As for the starter question- Unless the WR450 starter works I think I'm stuffed there :goofy: :banghead:

YZ and WR 400-426 frames are basically just the same so suspension parts should fit without problems. Don't know the diameter of the forks on the YZ however; you might have to change the entire front end. But that isn't difficult so just go for it.
Electric start on 400-426 is not an option.
The wheels should be interchangeable btw WR and YZ but the YZ does not have speedo-drive (in the front). Rear have different diameter as you have seen already. I think 450 have a different axle diameter but I'm not sure. Might just have been after a specific year (possibly 2005).

The problem I was thinking about was- Do the YZ hubs have the tabs for the speedo/hour meter?

Thanks for answering the other questions

I thought I had better add the rims that I'm looking at upgrading to- 2006 WR450, because they are excel rims.

I'll let everyone know the end result of it all in any case.

I thought I would share a few ideas with yaz all (even though not many are in a sharing mood : ).

This was my repair on a cracked leaking fuel tank. To repair it was simple- Drain the fuel, use a soldering iron with a sharp tip & weld the seam of the crack. I then used black plastic to fill it over a little, but you could use blue plastic if you are worried about what it looks like (I have already bought a new fuel tank so I am not worried what it looks like for now). Then go over it with a flat blade soldering tip to smooth it out (not needed unless worried about looks).

I am surprised nobody noticed the TTR250 rear brake caliper, brake line, rear master cylinder lol. I fitted it for now until my new stuff comes (can't wait). The rear brake caliper fits perfect, but where the brake line bolts on is not quite right. That's why I used the TTR250 rear brake line but if I wanted to get carried away I could have a braided one fitted (not that I am as I have bought the WR parts). The other problem is that the rear brake pedal does not adjust far enough down so it sits up too high. When use the kick-start it hits the brake pedal so I have to take the brake pedal pin out to start it lol. This could be fixed by fitting the WR lever rod to the TTR rear master cylinder, but why bother? lol.

I just realised that I have an Excel rim fitted to the front now so using the 2006 Excel wheel kit should work for me.
This is what I will be buying- 2006 wr450 Excel Rear wheel kit 2006 Excel Front wheel kit , can't wait!

Just an update-
The YZ426 forks fit my 1999 WR400 no dramas, a straight forward swap.
The rear wheel from the 2006 WR450 should fit, as well as the front, given that the 2006 spacers are used.

I now have my bike stripped to bits and am in the process of rebuilding it as I write this. Pictures to follow.

Enjoy!

Jarrah
