Hi I am new to street bikes. I have owned a dirt bike but that is it. I am trying to stay within a $2000 budget so I am looking at some 90s bikes. With that I am just looking to get some opinions on what is considered a lot of miles for a sport bike? Thanks!

I wouldnt be overly concerned about the milage on a bike, rather I would be more worried about how a bike has been looked after. My FZ had 85,000 on it when I sold it, but the guy that bought it was quick to notice how I take care of my toys.
I tend to think first impressions are everything when looking at used equipment.
look around, not just at the bike, you will get a feeling for how the owner takes care of everything else. if everything looks beat to hell, why would you think the bike has been treated any differently?

It depends on what model the bike is as well. For example a honda interceptor could (and many do) have over 100,000 miles on them with no problems and plenty of life left, while some of the more high strung/racing oriented bikes such as a Suzuki gsxr 600 or something that can turn well over 14,000rpm can be worn at only 30,000 miles. But as stated above, take a look at what the person's other toys, vehicles, shop/garage area, etc. look like to get a jest of how well he or she takes care of their things. Good luck looking! street bikes are loads of fun no matter what you're riding! :ride:

No simple answer.

A well maintained, adult owned sport bike can run a bazillion trouble free miles.

A heavily abused track hack can be totally wasted by 10k

Got about 25k on a 2001 R6. Must say it's been ridden fairly hard. Still running strong though! Hope to get another 5-10k before I look to rebuild or sell.

<p>Its not the mileage that matters, its how tye bike was treated.  The myth of sport bikes dying at low miles needs to die.  Even rough treated ones can still roll over a good amount of miles.  The Japanese know how to build bikes.

Ive rolled over 61k on my 01 VFR and know a guy that has over 200k on his 01 F4i.  He even had block damage, got a used block and put all his original parts in it.  All he did was hone the bores.  Didnt even use new rings.

Just buy the best you can with your budget.   Look for smoke out the pipe, the smell of the exhaust, discoloring of plastics.  This lets you know if its been an outside bike or garage/covered kept.  Also research common problems for the bikes you look at.<  Good luck./p>

Its not about the miles. Its about what the previous owner did to it.Or didnt do to it.The engines have to be very tough to run at 10,000+ rpm.A bike thats had oil changes every 3k and not bounced off of the rev limiter doing smoke shows should  make at least 50k before any work other than valve gap checks.1000cc bikes will run longer because they run at lower rpm at highway speeds.

I wouldnt buy a sport bike that has over 15k miles, unless you know the person and if he took really good care of it.

I love quotes like this.  Thats why you see all those busted sport bikes on the side of the highway.  LOL.  If a sport bikes engine dies with low miles, its because an idiot was riding it or a manufacturing defect.

simple answer ,in my opinion   20k on a true sportbike is equilvalent to 100k on a car

Just a blury pic.

Opinions and facts are two different things.  There are people that think a 6 month old phone is old and is useless because something newer is out.
