2008 WR450F with 2006 YZ suspension and cams

Recommended Posts

Maybe do the yz intake cam and the wr exhaust cam? Like the older WR's use to be before the smog cams.

Yeah, I thought about that too.

No opening up the motor for right now.

I've worn out all the tank, shroud, seat, bolts, carb clamps from tearing into this thing once every other day for a month.....

When my stock header arrives, I will try that before any jetting changes......The Dubach is way too loud for dual sport....so it will get a Lexx or similar with the quiet core.

Does the Dubach have an available quiet insert you could try?

Yes it does, but it's just a 'butt plug' type insert. It destroys throttle response.

The old Dr D inserts were cool, as they were little extra 'internal mufflers'.....but they don't fit on the newer pipes....

The Lexx system replaces the entire length of the perf core in the muffler, with three different diameters options.

Well that sucks.......

Hot start plunger o-ring was slightly torn, cavity was slightly corroded at the bottom, not allowing the plunger to drop all the way. Fixed it.

Hot start cap (plastic) is cracked. You can't even see it. Glued it up for now.

So, now I have this:

162

45

JD Red 3rd

Adjustable leak @ approx 50

stock functioning acv with 75 airjet

stock functioning hot start and choke

worn out slide plate seal

worn (but not out) slide plate

Dynatek ignition module on provided curve #3

Dubach full stainless exahust (YZ diameter)

No studder, period

No decel pop, period

Small flat spot at 1/4 turn throttle (and above) if under 5k rpms

Small flat spot at WOT under 7k rpms.

Now I can feel that the main is a bit too small, and that the NCVS needle (slightly richer) will help.

When my stock header arrives, I will try that before any jetting changes......The Dubach is way too loud for dual sport....so it will get a Lexx or similar with the quiet core.

After all that, I will jump into the Dynatek curve-maker, and try and 'spark' out the flat spots.

....i love taking off the tank, ... i love taking off the tank,.... I love taking off the tank,....

Sooooo, was all this worth it for the YZ cams?

So far, I still say no. I'm not done yet, but so far, no.

The power is much stronger, but at a slight expense of the loss of power at the bottom rpms.

If I was racing it, I'd say it's absolutely better. When you stay up in the rpms and ride aggressively all the time, it's quite a bit quicker.

But for Dual sport...... NO...

I checked my jetting yesterday against yours...

165 main

42 pilot

JD red needle, 3rd clip

75 air jet

accel pump arm zip tied

with my exhaust cam retarted a tooth it gave slightly more low end grunt, but really took off above ~4K, feels like a Vtech honda.

that of course is with a Lexx and trail saver tip, FMF superbomb head pipe. OEM air filter + filter skin

try my jetting out to see how it is. you might run a 168/45 to account for an open exhaust if it feels lean. the quiet tip design is why I run the Lexx over everything else (Akrapovic is a good design though too IMO)

UPDATE

Used the Dynatek Calibration software to re-calibrate the TPS.

TPS NO GOOD! Had to replace it....!

Even though it meters at WOT and closed throttle, there was almost nothing in between.,

Put on the new one, and the Dynatek system self calibrates the TPS, without turning a screw on the TPS! It's all in the software.

Just a few throttle turns, a few mouse clicks, and the TPS is calibrated, and the software reads out the relative resistance.

........but that's not the cool part..........

You then set your mapping 'turn-over points' by simply opening the throttle to anywhere from 0% to 100% for your 'closed' map, 'partial' map and 'full open' maps.

I was able to try out a 3% / 40% map in 25 seconds ...rode out the driveway and went 'hmmm, that's different....".

I tried several different turnover points and settled on 10% and 35% throttle as the transition points from 'closed' map to 'partial throttle map' to 'wide open' map.

These maps are all sub-maps of one of the four memories in the system.\

I chose to use memory #3, which has a pre-loaded 'agressive' map already installed.

You can go into the software and actually create any map you want, any turnover point and any relative advance or retard curve for any throttle postion.

I thought I'd keep it simple to start with, and just use one of the provided maps, and just play with turnover points for now.

THERE IS A NOTICEABLE CHANGE IN THROTTLE RESPONSE AND THROTTLE THROW with each change of the turnover points.\

So, if you have problems with whisky throttle, you keep the turnover point early in the the throttle, and jump right to the next map, which is always slightly less advance that the one with less throttle opening.

If you are geared high, like I am, and you want more throttle response from closed to 30% throttle, you put the turn over point later in the throttle opening, keeping it in the 'closed' map section.

It's pretty cool!

UPDATE

The LEXX exhaust arrived already. Only two days!

So, is it any good? Is a cheap POS? Did it do anything?

Yes, it is good.

No it is NOT a POS, or cheaply made.

Yes, it did something. Something good.

This pipe is QUIET.

I mean like really quiet.

It comes with a removable insert that covers the entire length of the muffler, and is not just a 'tip'.

The bike really likes this pipe. Much better snap at low rpms, and only a tiny bit of 'choking' at high rpms.

It also slows the YZ 'hit' down a bit. Not less power, it just takes longer to get to the power.

So it's not quite as fast, but the YZ hit issue before made doing wheelies nearly impossible; if you get near that hit, you could not keep it from going over.

So now the power is more linear.

I kept the YZ header on, just for grins, and so far so good.

I'm starting to like this bike, now that I'm not freaking out over how it runs all the time.

COME RIDE

I had a Lexx MXe pipe on my YZ250F. The bracket mount is cheap. Over 100 hours the pipe shakes around inside the bracket and the metal pits out. It could wear a hole in it eventually. Motoworks SR4 G2 with S/A insert was same dB as Lexx std insert. Lexx trail saver insert was very quiet but made XR80 power out of the 250F.

I agree, it's not top notch build quality. It will take some additional shade-tree work to make it acceptable. But I still like it.

I put in a smaller, rubber spacer in the bracket, so it would clamp tighter. Seems much better.

OK, I thought I'd try one more thing before changing to a 'known' carb:

I just now replaced:

Needle jet (ncvs 4th)

Jet needle (4 hole emulsion type, new)

Slide plate seal ( earlier today)

Fresh 45 pilot

162 > 168 main jet

Back to stock float bowl with 40 leak jet and CRFR diaphragm

Fresh oring on the fuel screw

It feels better on the stand, but I've got to put the shock and sh*t back on to ride it.....tomorrow.

OK, rode it again today.

- changed fork mid-valve stack (modifications to both rebound and compression)

- stiffened compression and rebound stacks in the shock

- fixed all lighting issues, new rear turn signals (not permanently mounted yet)

- mounted Endurance computer on custom bracket

THIS THING ROCKS!

It's fast, it wheelies like crazy, and it turns perfectly.

The suspension appears to now be very balanced, both under acceleration and braking.

Can't wait to get it out on a real ride.

It's impressive....!

Hey Krannie,

Frank here, from down south...

Was wondering what your shim stack looks like.

Yeah, the post is old..thought you might have that info..

I've been trying to dial in my forks and am still looking for the magic! :-)

I'll catch you on a ride sometime!

I had Steve Steric so the suspension.

I feel he over sprung it (.56) in the front and did not provide enough float, and too late. ...but I'm no suspension pro.

I may take it back to him or maybe to Travis.

My KTM 350 just had the KTM world Pro kit installed on it, and it is extremely good.

Please tell us more about the KTM world pro kit??? what was installed? your weight and skill? Fork and shock? Price?

thank you for your time ?

Pretty much everything inside the fork and shock are replaced....... $950 without springs or replacement of worn parts like seals.

It ain't cheap, but it sure exceeded my expectations by quite a bit.....and I've had over 17 suspension revalves done in the last 10 years....

Hey Krannie,

How do you like the 3.2 IMS. Did you have to use yz shrouds with it. I've got a 13 wr250f and was looking at one but it said must use yz shrouds.
