The peoples tank ! (fuel cell)

Recommended Posts

i'm trying to post this again so let's hope...

have you ever thought about this;

which is the best tank to race with?

A;the YZ tank

which tank holds it's fuel the lowest therefore improving the handling?

A; the Ty Davis tank (IMS & Clarke will also do here)

what's the difference between them?

A; the capacity

so how much do we need to carry?

A; enough for two hours & not 3 1/2.

SO WHY HASN'T ANYONE DARED TO BE DIFFERENT & BUILD A 2-2 1/2 GALLON TANK?

with the top surface of a YZ & the belly of a Ty Davis tank, the capacity to ride for two hours in a hare scramble. that first gallon of fuel would be sitting BELOW the bottom of the YZ tank!!!

what a tank!

so what do you say!

let me know either way.

remember, what's better than a YZ tank?

a lower YZ tank!

Taffy,

If you build it I WILL buy it. That is exactly what you need. I have always said, that it is not how much a bike weighs(within reason), but how it carries it's weight. have you ever sat on a DRZ400? They are 20lbs heavier, but feel 20 lbs lighter!!

Talk to ya later

taffy i was having the exact same thought,,,,so a week back i rang john williams at the tank shop.

the good news is he has agreed to build me an aluminium tank which has the same top profile as my existing tank but will hang down further at the sides .

looking a bit more like the 2stroke yz tank.

also i see the benfits of the aluminium tank as no more peeling tank graphics from fuel vapour passing thro the plastic, should also look better,,,,

the bad news is ill have to take the bike up to Dumfriess for a week so he can make it fit

ill let u know when its done,,,oh and the cost £250

I was working with Pete Denison over at A-Loop while he was developing his seat/tank kits for Honda's. (He also has a interesting rear sidepanel tank for the WR/YZ) But, the process of developing a new tank for market is VERY expensive and takes a good year or two. He stayed with the Honda's just for the fact that there are thousands of them out there. Now Clark & IMS are in that business and if they haven't seen enough payback, I'd have to bet their way. Ty Davis was probably paid big $ to ride blue, but hated the tank. So it was worth his effort (and probably Yamaha's $) to build a custom form.

Hey Taffy,

On your original set of questions - Which one boils over least with the after market headers?

A tank with 2 1/2 gallons would be perfect for me too. Lower profile and more compact. The KTM's get that size on all the 4-stroke EXC's, making them feel lighter yet. I have a friend with a KTM520 who has the 3 1/2? gal. MXC tank and the 2.5 gal. EXC tank. Usually he will carry extra fuel in a backpack just so he can use the smaller tank with it's smaller & lighter feel.

I don't have particulars, but Pirie Composites has made some tanks for the YZ/WR that are oversize (used on some GNCC bikes). I imagine they aren't cheap, but it is worth a check. I believe WER had one on their display WR at the bike show, they can probably steer you in the right direction.

so what are you saying? they all copied a tank using the same mould borrowed from each other? nope!

i don't buy it!

they all want to produce a better tank than anyone else. they just spit out the same old shyte & know that they'll flog a few tanks. i can't believe that clarke don't need an edge. tanks appear to be just about all they do.

i didn't start this thread to take orders like we did for the stickers.

i started it for your opinions of whether you thought it was the tank you never had & woz robbed of!

i was hoping for a monster response so that we could tell the manufacturers to wake up!

jake, i've done very few miles with the new header. it's miles clear of the filter housing & it is only mm's from the hose/radiator junction.

i can't wait for the weekend when i start testing again!

i've got a new needle coming in 10 days. DMM

i've deliberately gone for the 'D' series which i want to tune to it's extreme. the 'E' series would be too wild. i'll definately have a look at it again just to see how far apart they are.

Taffy, I think I have something right up your alley. My good friend showed me a trick one day. He showed me a way to "blow up a tank". It's just like it sounds, you fill up your tank with warm water and shoot compressed air into the vent tube to a certain degree until you start to see the tank expand then you pinch off the tube and let it sit for 24 hours. You can do this many times over to achieve the optimum size, usually it will take 2 times depending on the tank. This is NOT a joke, I have done this to my CR250 and my DR350 and got an extra 1/2 gallon. My friend has a 2.5 gallon tank on his YZ426f. By the way the tank still holds the shape of the stocker.

OK there you have it!! A worthy post from me. Will you find THIS in an archive?? No way Jose!! I'de be really surprised if anyone out there has done this. Best of luck dude!! ?

excuse me while i yawn!!! only kidding but thanks for the advice.

years ago, & i do mean years ago, i was racing at the manx gp in the IOM. the race was a 6 lapper of 226 miles so i was going to stop after 3 & fill my 20ltr F2 tank up ok?

with two hours to go & fog on the mountain they reduced the race to 4 laps so i took the tank off my F2 ducati pantah & put my F1 24ltr tank on, then filled it up. 4 laps straight through, ok?

the race was cancelled to the next day due to the fog on the mountain getting worse.

so with it back to 6 laps the next day i put my 24 ltr tank back on ready for the off.

can you imagine as we poured the 24 litres into the 20 & i'm saying "it'll be full any moment now!". gradually the 'little' tank took every drop infront of witness's. i could have died!!!after all that pissing about in the pits by me & the lads!

all the fuel from the 24 ltr F1 tank slipped into the 20ltr F2 tank. this was done infront of mates & mechanics as well as my racing friend alan who will take the piss & reminisce about your mistakes for years!!!

you see dan, i had blown the 20ltr alloy tank out & not measured the capacity. in the meantime the fibreglass 24ltr tank had had a few knocks & blobs of glass put in over the years!

this was all over a long time & thats why, & i hope you can imagine this, i am not allowed to talk about taff's big tank!!!

i've got a story for everything dan.

thanks again!

Taffy
