XR650R Carb on a XR650L

Recommended Posts

The Edelbrock XR650L carb for $299 on Ebay is NOT a pumper carb. The picture of the carb in that listing is actually the XR650R pumper carb, but that's not the carb you'll get. The Edelbrock XR650L carb looks just like this, but does not come with an accelerator pump. You can however buy an Edelbrock XR650L 'pumper' carb from Barnums whose been doing this for sometime. Rob Barnum spent years doing R&D work for Edelbrock on various products and knows this carb inside & out along with building XR's.

That Mikuni that Dutch referred to looks like a good buy and is a great carb once its tuned.

Be forewarned that in switching from your CV carb to a slide carb, that you will have more problems if you ride at different altitudes. I live in Phoenix, which is close to sea level, but also ride extensively in the San Jauns in Colorado. I switched from a CV carb to a Mikuni slide on one of my ATVs, and while the slide carb worked great when jetted for Phoenix, the bike would not run in Ouray, Colorado. A CV carb is somewhat self-adjusting for altitude, without having to rejet. I went back to the CV carb and am much happier.

Thats the thing about Ebay and auctions in general, when two people get bidding for something sometimes it goes for more than it's worth.

That was too much for that carb though. If you are willing to spend that much, buy a pumper.

Most of these guys havent been on in years. I would just try the stock cables first, and see if they work.

LOL i was reading intently and looking at these names and saying "where did they come from" Then BAM saw the 5year old dates LOL. Not bad info but kinda out dated and maybe some other options that are better who knows LOL

I put an R on my L just this week.

80$ ebay

all went well used L cables but had to remove 1 to 2 inchs of cassing

It rocks go for it .

My brother just bought an "L" and when we uncork it, we're going to throw my old "R" carb on on his bike.....

What kind of jetting did you do? did you follow the XRR jetting guide? That carb was tuned pretty well for my bike....i had the 68s, 180 main, comp needle in 3rd...yadayadayada.

Ya know I didn't even check jet sizes I looked that all was well and put it on .

I think it's alittle fat on the top when I get a few more miles on it .I will know more .

Being a 650cc also I'm thinking it'll be close enough for starters.

Your numbers seem alittle high though maybe 165 to 175 Im thinking .

If they are the same jets, those will be too rich for the L. In L terms, stock carb, they should be at 160-165 and 55-58 for sea level. The needle should work in the 3rd clip pos.

yeah, we'll most likely drop the main quite a bit...i have a handful of mains ranging from 160-185....

But do you think the pilot will be ok (68s)? how do you know if you need to go up or down on the pilot? thanks a lot for the help.

on a bit of a side note, the power on his brand new corked-up L is pretty nice....it feels pretty peppy...and should really open up with a little bit of work...all in all great bike ?

THis is the best explanation of how to find your correct pilot setting. A sticky in jetting by the great Eddie Sisneros...

I just put my R carb on the L. Literally just got back from the shed. I used a 160 main and 58 pilot. The pilot is a little lean (sea level, 55 degrees). I've got the fuel screw backed out to 3 1/2 so I'm going to try a 60 or 62 and we'll see if that dials it in better.

But I'll tell you what the power difference is nice. Better grunt.

husky123! When you talk about R carb is it the XR650r carb or the xr600r? Im putting a xr650r carb on a xr600r and Im fishing for input.. 640cc JE piston, K&N air, hotcam1. Can I go with the stock xr650r carb or do I have to change the jets??

Thanks swechilli
