I’m not sure if this has been asked before but, does anyone know what the item is that can be seen below and in front of the sump, in-between the frame rails, in the press/brochure pictures of the 2007 WR450F, as seen here:

http://pictures.tops...-wr450f-11w.jpg

Was it an early revision of oil tank maybe, perhaps before it became integral to the crankcases/sump?

Just asking out of curiosity!!

That is a bracket that holds a metal glide plate that goes under the plastic skid plate.

...and that is a 2008 or later (dark clutch cover).

Which is a good idea as mine collects some crud in there!

Ah right, a glide plate!

It is a 2007, if you look closely you can see the oil filter cover and clutch cover are the same colour. The clutch cover just appears darker as its overshadowed by the riders boot.

The graphics are 2007 too as the leading edge of the rad shroud is all white where as the 2008 had a blue section with the Yamaha logo on.

Ok fair enough, the 2007 clutch and oil filter covers aren't the same colour but it's still no 2008:

Do the Canadian bikes differ much in comparison to the US spec bikes?

The gap that you're talking about, on the 08 at least, was big enough to collect 10 lbs of mud on every ride. Poor design. You have to remove the plastic skid plate to get all the mud out.

I installed the Ricochet Alum skid plate and it plugged that hole nicely.

Know what you mean!

It isn't particularly muddy going where i ride but my 2008 still collects allsorts in there with the GYTR bash plate on!

That makes sense! I guess 'topspeed.com' got the pictures muddled up when creating the wr450f gallery!

you are correct !!! im pretty sure like you said thats the oil tank, since it doesnt hold it in the frame anymore... like my friends 06y250f has an oil tank exactly there, and the 450 holds the oil that was in the frame in the crankcase
