New 2012 KTM 350 SX-F suspension setup advice

Hello,

I recently traded in my '12 RMZ 250 and now am the proud owner of a new '12 KTM 350 SX-F and would like to get some recommendations regarding setup of the suspension. I weigh 190lbs without gear and would like to know what others with similar weight are running at (fork and shock compression and rebound settings)? I am 47 years old and ride mostly desert terrain and some occasional motocross. Thanks in advance!

all great mods so far, I only really use my 12 sxf350 for moto but have other bikes I ride offroad and haven't been in the desert since I race the mint 400 lol... your comeing from one great bike in the rmz ... so my set up is for mx ,240 in gear, springs front 5.4n/m, rear 63n/m also ride engineering link. I like the front end to stay up in the stroke and found that with the stock oil volume 380cc it stade up but was a little harsh . installed sdi spring seat set drilled to 9.5mm and 370 cc . now front end stays up and harshness is gone.really like the fork ! base setting are C 14,15,16 ,R 14,15 , shock I added a fc bladder kit 150psi HSC 2, 2.5 and C14,15,16, R 13,14,15... I have found that sag setting are real important and added a xtrig adjuster to make life alot easier! indoor mx sag 97,98 outdoor usually 100mm but sometimes 102-103 and one time 104. I've had the bike front end feel a little unsure at 102 went in to 100 and bike was on rails, other tracks and conditions 102 on rails and a 100 was skatey, never had a bike that sag was so important. also like you I'm new to ktm ,years ago I was a ktm/bmw dealer and didn't like the ktms that much and stadyed away from the brand ... not anymore love this 350 with a little set and the starter is icining on the cake!!! one thing I forgot I run tubliss tires on all my dirt bikes and think it adds alot of advantages.

Thank you very much for the feedback. My RMZ was a great handling bike but the transmission sucked IMO, was a little under powered for my liking too, but the real issue was that there are no increased capacity aftermarket gas tanks made for it. Anyway, the 350 is awesome and once I get the suspension dialed in I'll be a very happy camper. :-) Thanks again for the feedback.

Get a revalved, mine is at the shop right now! These things are valved super stiff and unless you are riding track it's a mandatory revalve. Also, they run ridiculous amounts of preload on the rear spring, so you will likely go up a couple rates there and down a rate or more in the front.

IMO the stock stuff is unridable off road unless its wide open non tech stuff and even then it will beat you up.

I have 2012 350sxf and find the front end super twitchy in the soft stuff. Seems like the forks could use a bit of work but it also came with MX51's front and rear, which I ran on my RMZ and I think I hate that front tire... Interesting about setting that sag, probaly pretty important to have the right rear spring on that thing too.

I would set everything to middle ground, Sag at 100mm and go from there. It has to do with weight yes, but there are other factors too that include terrain and your riding ability. Figure out what you don't like about it and then ask how to fix it.

I would set everything to middle ground, Sag at 100mm and go from there. It has to do with weight yes, but there are other factors too that include terrain and your riding ability. Figure out what you don't like about it and then ask how to fix it.


This is the best advice. You really have to work at finding the right settings that work for you. It took me about 6 weeks of tweaking until I found the right setup for my '13 450. These bikes turn and handle really well, but they are sensitive to sag and suspension settings. I found that I needed a little over 100mm (103-105) for the tracks I ride and my body position, as well as tweaking the compression and rebound on the front to get it to settle and track.

I didn't find the shock too hard to set up (other than sag). I ended up putting an xtrig adjuster on so I could tweak the sag easier.

Thanks for the advice. My sag is set at 105mm and I'm using the Motocross Action review settings. Using Flexx bars and just ordered some Fastway foot pegs. Very happy with the suspension and handling now. :-). The new pegs should help with standing (whoops and jumps).

FYI - I ride MX only (vet int, 185lb) and found MXA's settings on the front to be too stiff to settle and turn for me. I think they had 12 comp. I ended up going out to 19 comp!!! It still didn't bottom much and turned WAY better. That worked well until I had it revalved.

I have my rebound and comp set at 15 and it's plush.
